2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz Wi-Fi: Which Band Should You Use?
Most modern routers broadcast two Wi-Fi bands — 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz — sometimes as two network names. Here’s which to connect to and why.
The trade-off in one line: Lower frequency reaches farther but moves data slower; higher frequency is faster but doesn’t reach as far. So 2.4 GHz covers more of your home at lower speed, while 5 GHz is faster but loses signal through walls and distance.
The simple rule
- Use 5 GHz when you’re close to the router and want speed — streaming 4K, video calls, gaming, large downloads.
- Use 2.4 GHz when you’re far from the router or there are several walls between you and it, or for low-bandwidth smart-home gadgets (plugs, sensors, some cameras).
Why 2.4 GHz can feel slow
The 2.4 GHz band is crowded. Microwaves, garage-door openers, baby monitors, and your neighbors’ Wi-Fi all share it, and it has fewer non-overlapping channels than 5 GHz. That interference can drag down speed and stability. If you’re getting choppy performance up close, switch to 5 GHz, which has far less competing traffic.
How to pick the band on Windows
If your router gives each band its own name (often something like MyWiFi and MyWiFi-5G):
- Click the network/Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar.
- Choose the 5 GHz network when near the router, or the 2.4 GHz one when far away.
- Enter the password and connect.
If both bands share one name, the router and your device pick automatically — you generally don’t need to choose.
