OneDrive Icon Missing From the Taskbar? Get It Back in the Notification Area
The OneDrive cloud icon has vanished from the notification area, so you can’t reach its settings or check sync status.
Why: Almost always one of two things — the icon is tucked into the hidden-icons overflow, or OneDrive simply isn’t running. A missing icon doesn’t mean your files are gone.
Fix 1: Check the hidden-icons overflow
The icon is often just hidden, not gone.
- Click the Show hidden icons arrow (the small caret at the left of the notification area).
- Look for the OneDrive cloud icon (white or blue). If it’s there, you can drag it onto the visible taskbar to keep it in sight.
Fix 2: Start OneDrive (it may not be running)
If the icon isn’t in the overflow either, OneDrive isn’t active.
- Select Start.
- Type OneDrive in the search box.
- Select OneDrive from the results to launch it.
The cloud icon should reappear in the notification area within a few seconds.
Fix 3: Reinstall the latest OneDrive
If starting it does nothing, the app may be damaged or outdated. Reinstalling the current version restores the icon and brings the latest fixes — your files in the cloud are unaffected.
- Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft OneDrive → Uninstall, then install the latest OneDrive app and sign in.
FAQ
Are my files gone if the icon disappears? No. The icon is just the front end. Your files remain in OneDrive (and in the local OneDrive folder); the icon returns once OneDrive is running.
It reappears then vanishes every restart — why? OneDrive may not be set to start with Windows. Once it’s running, open Settings → Sync and back up → Advanced settings and confirm OneDrive starts automatically on sign-in.
