Chrome Using Too Much Memory or CPU? Turn On Memory Saver and Find the Culprit
Chrome is hogging your RAM or CPU — fans spin up, the whole PC feels sluggish, and Task Manager shows several “Google Chrome” processes near the top.
Why: Each tab and extension runs in its own process, so memory and CPU add up fast. Usually it’s too many open tabs, one heavy extension, or a single runaway page (a stuck script or an auto-playing site) — not Chrome itself being broken.
Fix 1: Find the heavy tab or extension with Chrome’s Task Manager
Chrome has its own task manager that shows exactly which tab or extension is using the memory and CPU.
- Press Shift+Esc (or go to the More menu (three dots) → More tools → Task manager).
- Click the Memory column header to sort, then the CPU column, so the biggest users float to the top.
- Find the offender — it’ll name the tab or list the extension. Select the row and click End process to kill just that one without closing Chrome.
- If a tab keeps climbing, close it and reopen; if an extension is the culprit, see Fix 3.
Fix 2: Turn on Memory Saver
Memory Saver deactivates tabs you aren’t using and reloads them when you click back, which frees a lot of RAM when you keep many tabs open.
- Go to chrome://settings/performance (or Settings → Performance).
- Turn on Memory Saver.
- Pick a level:
- Moderate — tabs become inactive after a longer period (mildest savings).
- Balanced (recommended) — inactive after an optimal period.
- Maximum — inactive after a shorter period (most savings, more reloads).
- While you’re here, turn on Energy Saver on a laptop to cut background work.
Tip: turn on Settings → Appearance → Show tab memory usage so hovering a tab shows how much RAM it’s using.
Fix 3: Disable heavy or unneeded extensions
Extensions run constantly in the background, and a bad one can pin the CPU.
- Go to chrome://extensions.
- Toggle off everything you don’t use daily; remove anything you don’t recognize.
- If one extension was the offender in Fix 1, disable it, then update or replace it.
Fix 4: Update Chrome and restart it
Old builds leak memory that newer ones fixed.
- Go to chrome://settings/help — Chrome checks for updates automatically.
- Click Relaunch to apply. A full restart also clears any process that had run away.

Why are there so many “Google Chrome” processes in Windows Task Manager? That’s normal — Chrome splits tabs, extensions, and the GPU into separate processes for stability. Use Chrome’s own Task Manager (Fix 1) to see which is which.
