Microsoft Edge Says "Sync Is Paused" or "You've Been Signed Out"? Get It Syncing Again
Microsoft Edge shows “Sync is paused” or “You’ve been signed out” in the profile menu, and your favorites, passwords, or open tabs stop updating across your devices.
Why: Your sign-in to your Microsoft Account expired or was interrupted (a password change, a security prompt, or a network hiccup), so Edge paused sync to protect your data. Signing back in usually restarts it.
Fix 1: Sign back in to sync
- Click the profile icon in the top-right corner of Edge.
- Pick your account (or Add new account if it’s missing) and click Sign in to sync data.
- Complete any Microsoft Account prompt. The “Sync is paused” banner should clear and sync resumes.
Fix 2: Confirm sync is turned on
Sometimes the account is fine but sync itself got switched off.
- Open Settings and more (three dots) → Settings → Profiles, then open Sync (or go to edge://settings/profiles and click Sync).
- Make sure the master Sync toggle is on, and that the items you care about — Favorites, Passwords, History, Open tabs, Settings, Extensions — are each enabled.
Fix 3: Turn sync off and back on, or re-add the profile
If it stays paused, reset the sign-in.
- In Settings → Profiles, click Sign out to sign out of the profile, then sign in again with Sign in to sync data (Fix 1).
- Still stuck? Make sure you’re not blocked by a work or school policy — try the same account in Edge on another device or sign in to your Microsoft Account in a browser to confirm the account itself works.
FAQ
Will signing out and back in delete my favorites or passwords? No — they’re stored in your Microsoft Account and sync back down when you sign in again. (Don’t use Clear browsing data to “fix” sync — that can remove synced data from all your devices.)
Sync still won’t turn on at work. Your organization may restrict Edge sign-in or sync by policy. Confirm with your IT admin, since you can’t override that yourself.
