Chrome Won't Play Videos or Has No Sound on a Site: How to Fix It

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 2 min read February 19, 2026 · by Ryan Bennett

A video won’t start in Chrome, or a site plays with no sound even though audio works everywhere else on your computer.

Why: It’s usually one of a few things — the site is muted by a per-site permission, your browsing data is corrupt, an extension is interfering, or (for paid streaming) protected-content playback is turned off. Work through these in order.

Fix 1: Unmute the site (the no-sound culprit)

If a single site is silent but your speakers work elsewhere, Chrome has muted it.

  1. On the site, click the View site information icon (the tune/page icon) to the left of the address bar, then choose Site settings.
  2. Find Sound and set it to Allow. Your change saves automatically.
  3. Reload the page. (If you’d previously right-clicked the tab and chose Mute site, this clears it.)

To change the default for all sites: Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → Sound, then allow sites to play sound.

Fix 2: Update Chrome and restart

Video playback often needs the current version of Chrome.

  1. Click More (three dots, top right) → Help → About Google Chrome.
  2. Let it check for and install any update, then click Relaunch.
  3. If a single update doesn’t help, restart your computer to clear stuck graphics/audio processes.

Fix 3: Rule out extensions and bad browsing data

  1. Open an Incognito window (Ctrl+Shift+N) and load the site. If it plays there, an extension is the cause.
  2. Back in a normal window, go to More → Extensions → Manage extensions and turn off your extensions, then re-enable them one at a time to find the offender.
  3. Clear stale data: More → Delete browsing data (Ctrl+Shift+Delete), tick Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data, choose a time range, and click Delete data.

Fix 4: Turn on protected content for paid streaming

If Netflix, Disney+, Spotify, or similar won’t play (often a black screen or error), Chrome may be blocked from using the identifiers those services require.

  1. Go to Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → Protected content IDs.
  2. Choose Sites can play protected content.
  3. Reload the streaming site. With this off, Google notes playback quality may be reduced or certain movies/music won’t play.

FAQ

Audio plays but the video is black. Try the incognito and clear-data steps in Fix 3 first; if it persists across all video, the cause is usually graphics-related — relaunching Chrome and your computer (Fix 2) resolves most cases.

Old Flash videos won’t play. They never will — Adobe ended Flash Player support and no version of Chrome plays Flash audio or video anymore.
