Chrome Won't Update or "Update Failed"? Fix Error 3, 4, 7, 10, 11, 12
Chrome’s About page shows an update error instead of installing the latest version — often an error number or a message like “Updates are disabled by administrator.”
Why: The updater couldn’t reach Google’s servers, the download was blocked by antivirus/firewall, an admin policy turned updates off, or the existing install is damaged. The error code tells you which.
Fix 1: Restart and try the update again
The update may simply not have finished.
- Close every Chrome window and restart your computer.
- Reopen Chrome and go to chrome://settings/help. Chrome checks automatically; if an update downloads, click Relaunch.
This alone clears the most common transient cases (and many “Error 3 / 11 — Update server not available” hits).
Fix 2: Match the error code to the cause
Google lists these by what they mean:
- Error 3 or 11 — “Update server not available.” A network/connection issue; check your internet and retry (Fix 1), then Fix 4.
- Error 4 or 10 — “Update check failed to start.” Often a damaged updater — go to Fix 5 (clean reinstall).
- Error 7 or 12 — “Download failed.” Usually antivirus/firewall blocking the download — see Fix 4.
- “Updates are disabled by administrator” — a policy is blocking updates — see Fix 3.
Fix 3: “Updates are disabled by administrator”
This means a Group Policy or registry setting (often on a work/school PC) turned updates off.
- On a managed computer, contact whoever has admin rights — only they can re-enable updates.
- On your own PC, this can be left over from old “tuning” tweaks or unwanted software; remove suspicious programs (Fix 5) and reinstall Chrome to reset the updater.
Fix 4: Let Chrome’s updater through your security software
Antivirus, firewall, or parental controls can block the download (Error 7/12).
- Temporarily allow updates in your security software, or whitelist Google’s update hosts:
tools.google.comanddl.google.com. - Retry the update at chrome://settings/help.
- Turn your protection back on afterward.
Fix 5: Reinstall Chrome (Windows standalone installer)
If the updater is broken (Error 4/10) or nothing else works, reinstall.
- Uninstall Chrome (Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Google Chrome → Uninstall). Your bookmarks/passwords stay if you’re signed in to your Google Account.
- Download Chrome again from Google and run the installer; on Windows, use the standalone (offline) installer if the regular one keeps failing.
- Confirm the version at chrome://settings/help.
FAQ
Where do I even see the update button? Go to chrome://settings/help (or Settings → About Chrome). Chrome checks and installs automatically; you just click Relaunch.
Will reinstalling lose my bookmarks and passwords? No, as long as you’re signed in to your Google Account — they sync back. Sign in before uninstalling to be safe.
