Gmail Not Receiving Emails? Find the Missing Messages and Get Your Inbox Working

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 3 min read December 3, 2025 · by Ryan Bennett

Senders say they emailed you but nothing arrives, or messages that were in your inbox have disappeared. You can usually still send mail — it’s only receiving (or finding) that’s broken.

Why: Gmail almost never silently drops mail. The message is nearly always somewhere — caught by a filter that archived or deleted it, sorted into Spam, hidden under a different tab, or blocked because your storage is full (a full account stops accepting new mail). Less often, a rogue filter or forwarding rule added by someone else is moving your mail out of sight.

Fix 1: Search every folder, not just the inbox

A missing email is usually still in your account — it just skipped the inbox. Search across Spam and Trash too:

  1. Open Gmail on a computer.
  2. In the search bar at the top, click Show search options (the sliders icon on the right).
  3. Open the Search dropdown (it defaults to “Mail”) and choose Mail & Spam & Trash.
  4. Type the sender or a keyword and press Search.

If you find it in Spam, open it and click Report not spam so future mail from that sender lands in your inbox. If it’s in Trash, select it and click Move to → Inbox.

Fix 2: Check your filters for “Delete it” or “Skip Inbox”

A filter you (or an app) created can quietly archive or trash incoming mail before you ever see it:

  1. Click the Settings gear (top right) → See all settings.
  2. Open the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab.
  3. Read each filter. Look for actions like Skip the Inbox (Archive it), Delete it, or Forward to.
  4. To stop one, click edit to change the action, or delete to remove the filter entirely.

While you’re there, scroll the same tab to Blocked addresses — if the sender is listed, click unblock.

Fix 3: Free up storage if your account is full

Your 15 GB is shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos. When it fills, Gmail can stop receiving new mail and senders get a bounce message.

  1. Go to storage.google.com (or one.google.com/storage) to see how full you are.
  2. Empty the Trash and Spam folders in Gmail — they still count until cleared.
  3. Find big attachments: in the Gmail search bar type has:attachment larger:10M, then delete what you don’t need and empty Trash.

Storage figures can take up to 48–72 hours to update after a big cleanup, but new mail starts flowing again once you’re under the limit.

Fix 4: Check forwarding, POP/IMAP, and unknown account access

If mail is being downloaded or forwarded elsewhere, it can leave your inbox automatically:

  1. Settings → See all settings → Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  2. Under Forwarding, remove any address you don’t recognize.
  3. Under POP Download, if another mail program is pulling messages, set it to keep Gmail’s copy in the inbox rather than archive/delete.
  4. Open myaccount.google.com → Security → Your connected apps & services and remove any third-party app you don’t trust.

An unfamiliar forwarding rule is a red flag that your account may be compromised — change your password and run a Security Checkup if you find one.

FAQ

The email is in “All Mail” but not my Inbox — why? It was archived (often by a filter). Open it from All Mail and click Move to Inbox.

A specific sender never gets through. Check Spam and Blocked addresses first, then add the sender to your Contacts so Gmail trusts them.

Could it be a temporary Gmail outage? Rarely. Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard, but a full account or a filter is far more likely.
