How to Recover Deleted Emails in Gmail (and Empty Spam & Trash)

When you delete a message in Gmail it doesn’t vanish — it sits in Trash for 30 days, where you can still get it back. Spam works the same way. Here’s how to recover mail and how to clear those folders for good.

Why: Gmail keeps deleted mail in Trash, and flagged mail in Spam, for 30 days before erasing it automatically. Inside that window you can restore anything. After it, or once you empty the folder yourself, regular users can’t recover the message — so recover first, then clear.

Fix 1: Recover a message from Trash

1. Open Gmail on a computer.
2. In the left sidebar, click More to expand it, then click Trash.
3. Check the box next to the message you want back.
4. At the top, click Move to and choose Inbox (or any label).

If you can’t see the message in Trash, search across every folder: click Show search options (the sliders icon), set the Search dropdown to Mail & Spam & Trash, and search for the sender or a keyword. Recover it from Spam by opening it and clicking Not spam.

Fix 2: Empty Trash to free up space

Trash still counts against your 15 GB until it’s cleared.

1. In the left sidebar, click Trash.
2. At the top, click Empty Trash now to delete everything, or check specific messages and click Delete forever.

Fix 3: Empty the Spam folder

1. In the left sidebar, click Spam (click More first if it’s hidden).
2. At the top, click Delete all spam messages now, or select specific messages and click Delete forever.

Both Trash and Spam empty themselves automatically after 30 days, but clearing them by hand reclaims space immediately.

FAQ

Can I recover an email after 30 days or after I emptied Trash? Not as a regular user — once a message leaves Trash it’s permanently deleted and can’t be restored. (Google Workspace admins have a separate 25-day restore window in the Admin console.)

I deleted from Trash by accident — is it gone? Yes, deleting from Trash is permanent for personal accounts. Always Move to → Inbox instead of deleting if you might need it.

Does emptying Trash free up storage right away? It removes the messages immediately, though the storage figure on your account can take a while to update.
