How to Work on Google Docs, Sheets and Slides Offline

You want to keep working in Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides when you have no internet — on a flight, a train, or a spotty connection.

Why: Offline editing isn’t on by default. It needs the Google Docs Offline extension in Chrome (or Edge) plus the Offline setting switched on in Google Drive, which downloads your recent files to the browser so you can edit them with changes synced the next time you’re online.

Fix 1: Turn on offline access (do this while you’re online)

You must set this up before you lose connection, in Chrome or Microsoft Edge (not Incognito/Private mode).

1. Install the Google Docs Offline extension from the Chrome Web Store and make sure it’s turned on.
2. Open Google Drive (drive.google.com). Top right, click the Settings gear → Settings.
3. Turn on the Offline setting (it’s worded as “Create, open and edit your recent Google Docs, Sheets and Slides files on this device while offline”).
4. Click Done. If you have enough storage, your most recent files are saved offline automatically.

When you’re offline, just open Drive or any Doc/Sheet/Slide in that browser — it opens from the local copy.

Fix 2: Make specific files available offline

To guarantee a particular file is downloaded (not just recent ones):

1. On the Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screen, find the file, click More (the three-dot menu), and turn on Available offline.
2. Or, with the file open, click File → Make available offline.

A small checkmark or “offline” badge indicates the file is ready to use without internet.

Fix 3: If offline still won’t turn on

• Wrong browser or mode: Offline only works in Chrome or Edge, and not in Incognito/Private windows. Reopen in a normal window.
• Extension disabled: Go to your browser’s extensions page and confirm Google Docs Offline is enabled. Reinstall it if it’s missing.
• Multiple accounts: Only one account per browser profile can have offline enabled. If you use several Google accounts, set up a separate browser profile for each one you want offline.
