You installed Drive for desktop, but the Google Drive (usually G:) doesn’t appear in File Explorer.

Why: Drive for desktop mounts your files as a virtual drive in Windows. If there’s no free drive letter, the app isn’t running, or a firewall/proxy is blocking it, the drive simply won’t show up in File Explorer even though the app is installed.

Fix 1: Make sure Drive for desktop is actually running

Look in the taskbar (bottom-right, near the clock) for the Drive icon. Click the ^ arrow to reveal hidden icons if needed.
No icon? Open Google Drive from the Start menu and sign in.
Once it’s running and signed in, reopen File Explorer and look for Google Drive (G:) in the left navigation pane under “This PC.”

Fix 2: Free up a drive letter, then restart Drive

This is the most common cause on Windows — Drive needs a free letter to mount on.

If every drive letter is in use (often by mapped network drives), Drive for desktop can’t mount and won’t appear.
In File Explorer, disconnect a mapped drive you don’t need: right-click it under “This PC” → Disconnect. Or open Disk Management (right-click Start → Disk Management) to see which letters are taken.
Restart Drive: click the Drive taskbar icon → Settings gear → Quit, then reopen it.
To choose the letter yourself, open the Drive icon → Settings gear → Preferences → the Settings gear inside, and set the mount point / drive letter for Google Drive streaming.

Fix 3: Confirm streaming mode and re-link the account

Open the Drive icon → Settings gear → Preferences → inner Settings gear.
Make sure My Drive is set to Stream files — streaming is what creates the virtual drive in File Explorer (mirroring puts a folder in your user profile instead).
If it still won’t appear, Disconnect account there, sign back in, and pick your folder/mount location again.

Fix 4: Allow Drive through firewall/proxy, then reinstall

Certain firewall, proxy, or antivirus settings block Drive for desktop. Allow Google Drive through Windows Defender Firewall and your security software, then restart the app.
On a work or school PC, your admin may not have enabled Drive for desktop for your organization or device — check with IT.
