Google Drive for Desktop Won't Sync on Windows? How to Fix Stuck Sync
Files you add or edit on your PC aren’t showing up in My Drive (or vice versa), and Drive for desktop seems stuck.
Why: Sync usually stalls for one of a few reasons — sync got paused, the app needs a restart, your account connection has gone stale, a firewall or proxy is blocking Drive, or there’s no free drive letter for Drive to mount on Windows. Work through these fixes fastest-first.
Fix 1: Resume sync, then restart Drive for desktop
Start with the two-second checks before anything heavier.
- In the Windows taskbar (bottom-right, near the clock), click the Drive icon. If you don’t see it, click the ^ arrow to show hidden icons.
- Click the Settings gear at the top of the panel. If you see Resume syncing, click it — sync was paused. (You can pause or resume sync here at any time.)
- If it’s already running, restart the app: click the Settings gear → Quit, then reopen Google Drive from the Start menu.
Give it a minute to reconnect and watch the activity list to confirm files start moving.
Fix 2: Check your connection, storage, and any sync errors
- Confirm you’re online and that your Google storage isn’t full — Drive stops syncing new files when your account is out of space.
- Open the Drive icon in the taskbar and look for a list of errors or files that failed to sync. Drive flags individual problem files there so you can fix or remove them.
- Make sure the PC has enough local disk space to sync the files you’ve marked for offline access.
Fix 3: Disconnect and reconnect your account
If sync is still stuck, refresh the account connection.
- Click the Drive taskbar icon → Settings gear → Preferences.
- Open Settings (the gear inside Preferences) → find your account → click Disconnect account.
- Sign back in, and when prompted choose your folder location again. Drive will re-index and resume syncing.
Fix 4: Free up a drive letter or clear a firewall/proxy block (Windows)
Two Windows-specific causes Google calls out directly:
- No free drive letter: Drive for desktop mounts My Drive as a virtual drive (default G:). If every letter is taken — for example by mapped network drives — Drive can’t mount and won’t sync. Free up a drive letter (disconnect an unused mapped drive in File Explorer), then restart Drive for desktop.
- Firewall / proxy / antivirus: Certain firewall, proxy, and network settings can block Drive for desktop. Allow Drive through Windows Defender Firewall and your security software, then restart the app.
If none of that works, reinstall Drive for desktop with the latest version from Google’s download page.
FAQ
Where is the pause/resume control? Click the Drive icon in the Windows taskbar, then the Settings gear at the top of the panel — pause and resume live in that menu.
My file shows a sync error icon. Open the Drive taskbar panel; Drive lists files it couldn’t sync and why. Common causes are an unsupported file type, a file that’s too large, or a name conflict.
Will reconnecting my account delete my files? No. Your files live in Google Drive in the cloud; disconnecting and reconnecting just re-establishes the link from this PC.
