Bluetooth Audio Sounds Bad on Windows 11? Fix Poor Headset Sound Quality

Bluetooth headphones may sound worse when a call or another app uses their microphone. For Bluetooth Classic, Windows switches from music playback (A2DP) to the hands-free profile (HFP) when the microphone or a communications stream requires it. This reduces available playback quality. Bluetooth LE Audio has different capabilities and needs compatible Windows, PC and headset hardware.

Fix 1: Select the headset and check microphone use

Open Settings → System → Sound and choose your headphones under Output. Windows 11 uses a unified output endpoint for Bluetooth Classic headsets and switches profiles automatically; you should not expect separate Stereo and Hands-Free choices.

On Windows 10, separate Stereo and Hands-Free endpoints may appear. Choose Stereo for music when you do not need the headset microphone. This Windows 10 UI is not a required Windows 11 step.

Fix 2: Close apps using the headset microphone

Close calls, voice chat and recording apps, including background sessions, then try music again. In the calling app, select a separate laptop/USB microphone if you want to keep Bluetooth Classic headphones available for higher-quality playback. Merely changing the output format does not prevent HFP when the headset microphone is needed.

Windows normally returns to A2DP when the communications stream and headset microphone are no longer in use. If quality remains poor, disconnect/reconnect the headphones and check the app’s output selection.

Fix 3: Check supported formats and drivers

Install Windows updates and the PC manufacturer’s Bluetooth/audio drivers. Under the headset’s sound properties, use an output format that the device actually offers; do not force an unavailable “DVD quality” format. A format option cannot remove Bluetooth Classic’s microphone/profile limitation.

If sound is only in one ear, check headset fit, charge, balance and the device’s own diagnostics. Mono audio mixes channels; it is not a universal repair for a silent earbud.

Can I have stereo music and the Bluetooth microphone together? Classic HFP has playback limitations during microphone use. Some compatible LE Audio systems support better simultaneous playback and microphone operation; verify the capabilities of your Windows build, PC and headset rather than assuming all Bluetooth devices behave alike.

Why is there no Stereo entry? A single output is expected on Windows 11 for Classic headsets. Select the headset, then check which app is requesting microphone or communications audio.
