Bluetooth Headphones Connected but No Sound on Windows 11? How to Fix It

Your Bluetooth headphones or speaker show as “Connected” in Windows 11, but no audio plays from them.

Why: Windows usually keeps routing sound to your laptop speakers because the Bluetooth device was never selected as the output, or it’s connected to the silent “Hands-Free” profile instead of stereo. These fixes go fastest-first.

Fix 1: Set the Bluetooth device as the output

Connecting a device does not automatically make Windows play through it — you have to pick it as the output.

1. Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
2. Under Output, select your headphones from the list (pick the Stereo entry, not one labelled Hands-Free).
3. Play a test sound or song. If you see two entries for the same headset, the stereo one carries music.
4. Make sure the volume slider at the top isn’t at zero and the speaker icon isn’t muted.

Fix 2: Check the volume mixer and per-app volume

Even with the right output picked, a muted app or master volume will stay silent.

1. Select the Sound icon on the taskbar and drag the volume up; click the speaker icon to unmute if it shows a slash.
2. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound, scroll to Volume mixer, and confirm the app you’re using (and System sounds) isn’t muted or set to zero.
3. Test again — many “no sound” cases are just one muted slider.

Fix 3: Toggle Bluetooth off and on, then reconnect

A quick reset reattaches the audio profile, which often fixes a connection that links but won’t pass sound.

1. Select the Network/Sound/Battery icons on the taskbar to open Quick Settings, select the Bluetooth tile to turn it off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
2. Power the headphones off and on so they reconnect.
3. Recheck the Output in Sound settings (Fix 1) and play a test sound.

Fix 4: Set the audio format to DVD Quality

A mismatched sample rate can mute Bluetooth output. Microsoft recommends resetting it to a standard stereo format.

1. Select Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, select your headphones, then open Advanced sound properties.
2. Under Output settings, set Format to 2 channels, 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality).
3. Apply, then play a test sound.

Why are there two entries for my headphones? Headsets expose a stereo (music) profile and a Hands-Free (call) profile. For music, pick the stereo one as your output; for calls, Windows switches to Hands-Free automatically.

Sound works on my phone but not the PC. That means the headphones are fine — the PC just isn’t routing audio to them. Set them as the output (Fix 1).

Still silent after all this. Update the Bluetooth driver in Device Manager, then restart, remove the device, and pair it fresh.
