Camera Image Black or Upside Down in Windows 11: How to Fix It

Your webcam turns on, but the preview is all black, far too dark, or flipped upside down.

Why: The camera is working — what’s wrong is the image itself. A privacy shutter, low brightness, or a rotation setting (common when an external webcam is mounted at an angle) is the usual cause. If the picture is right in Camera settings but black everywhere else, a driver glitch is to blame.

Fix 1: Rule out a covered or dark camera

• Many laptops and webcams have a physical shutter or privacy switch — slide it open.
• If you see a black placeholder with a white camera icon, check the taskbar for a separate window that opened the camera.
• Point the camera at a well-lit area; a very dark room can look like a black image.

Fix 2: Adjust brightness and rotation in Camera settings

Windows 11 has per-camera image controls with a live preview:

1. Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras.
2. Under Connected cameras, select your webcam to open its live preview.
3. Raise Brightness (and Contrast) if the image is too dark — changes apply immediately and are saved as the default.
4. For an upside-down or sideways external camera, use the Rotation control to set it the right way up.

Fix 3: Reinstall the driver if the image is still wrong

If the preview is fine here but black in apps, or the controls don’t help, refresh the driver:

1. Right-click Start → Device Manager, expand Cameras.
2. Right-click your camera → Uninstall device; if offered, tick Attempt to remove the driver, then OK.
3. Open the Action menu → Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the camera.
4. Reboot and re-check the image.

FAQ

There’s no Rotation option for my camera. Rotation appears mainly for external cameras that support it; built-in laptop cameras often don’t expose it. Reinstalling the driver (Fix 3) is the path there.
