Default Printer Keeps Changing in Windows 11? Lock It Down
Your default printer in Windows 11 keeps switching on its own — you set it, then it jumps to a different printer the next time you print.
Why: Windows 11 ships with “Let Windows manage my default printer” turned on. With that setting on, Windows makes your most recently used printer the default. On laptops it’s worse — change locations and Windows picks the last printer you used at that spot. Turn the setting off and your manual choice sticks.
Fix 1: Turn off “Let Windows manage my default printer”
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Scroll to Printer preferences.
- Turn Off the toggle for Let Windows manage my default printer.
You’ll notice the Set as default button only appears once this toggle is off — that’s the clue that Windows was managing it for you.
Fix 2: Set the printer you actually want as default
- Still in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, click the printer you want.
- Click Set as default.
The printer’s status now shows Default, and Windows will stop swapping it out from under you.

Why does Windows do this by default? The “manage my default printer” feature is meant for people who move between locations (home, office, a client site) so the nearest printer becomes default automatically. If you always print to the same printer, it just gets in the way.
The Set as default button is missing. That means “Let Windows manage my default printer” is still on. Turn it off first (Fix 1), then the button appears.
It still changes after a Windows update. Updates can occasionally reset preferences. Re-check the toggle is off and set your default again — it’s a two-click fix.
