Camera Error 0xA00F4243: "Another App Is Using the Camera" in Windows 11

You try to start your webcam and Windows shows error 0xA00F4243 — “Another app or process is using the camera.”

Why: Only one app can hold the camera at a time. If Teams, Zoom, Skype, or a browser tab already grabbed it (sometimes invisibly in the background), the next app is locked out. The fix is to find and release whatever is holding it.

Fix 1: Close the other apps using your camera

  • Close any obvious video apps — Teams, Zoom, Skype, OBS, Camera, or a browser tab on a video call.
  • A browser left open on a meeting site keeps the camera even when you can’t see it — close that tab or the whole browser.
  • Reopen only the one app you want to use the camera in.

Fix 2: End stray camera processes in Task Manager

If nothing obvious is open, a hung process may still hold the camera:

  1. Right-click the taskbar → Task Manager.
  2. Find any video/conferencing app or a stuck process.
  3. Right-click it → End task.
  4. Try your camera again.

Fix 3: Re-toggle camera access, then reboot

  1. Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Camera.
  2. Confirm Camera access and Let apps access your camera are on, and the app you want is allowed in the list.
  3. Turn the target app’s toggle off, then on to break a stuck lock.
  4. If it still won’t release, restart the PC — that clears every process holding the camera.

FAQ

Why does this happen right after a call ends? Some apps don’t release the camera cleanly when a meeting closes. Fully quitting the app (not just leaving the call) or a reboot frees it.

Camera isn’t found at all instead? That’s error 0xA00F4244 — see Camera error 0xA00F4244 “We can’t find your camera”.
