Scanner Not Detected in Windows 11? Get It Recognized Again

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 2 min read November 2, 2025 · by Ryan Bennett

Windows 11 won’t detect your scanner (or the scanner half of your all-in-one printer), so you can’t scan anything.

Why: A scanner that’s on and connected should install on its own — over USB the moment you plug it in, or automatically if it’s on the same network. When it doesn’t appear, it’s usually a connection issue, a multifunction printer whose scanner half wasn’t detected, or a missing driver. Work through these in order.

Fix 1: Check the basics first

  • Make sure the scanner is turned on, not just plugged in.
  • USB scanner: seat the cable firmly in a port directly on the PC (avoid hubs); try a different port.
  • Network/wireless scanner: confirm it’s on the same Wi-Fi network as your PC.

Fix 2: Add the scanner manually

If Windows didn’t pick it up on its own:

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Next to Add a printer or scanner, click Add device.
  3. Let Windows search. If your scanner appears, click Add device next to it.

Fix 3: Confirm an all-in-one is detected as a scanner

If your device is a multifunction / All-In-One printer, it may have installed as a printer only:

  1. In Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, click the device.
  2. Look for a Scanner settings option in the list.
    • If it’s there, Windows recognizes the scanner — open the Windows Scan app (or Windows Fax and Scan) and scan.
    • If it’s not there, the scanner half wasn’t detected. Remove the device and re-add it (Fix 2), or install the full driver from the manufacturer in Fix 4.

Fix 4: Install the manufacturer’s driver

Some scanners need the maker’s own driver (WIA/TWAIN) before Windows will see them:

  • Go to your scanner or printer manufacturer’s website, download the latest Windows 11 driver/software for your exact model, install it, then reboot and recheck Printers & scanners.

FAQ

It scanned fine until a Windows update. An update can replace or break the scanner driver. Reinstall the manufacturer’s driver (Fix 4) and re-add the device (Fix 2).

My all-in-one prints but won’t scan. That’s the classic “detected as printer, not scanner” case — check for the Scanner settings option (Fix 3); if it’s missing, reinstall the full driver.

Still nothing after all four fixes. There may be a hardware fault with the scanner itself. Check the manufacturer’s website for model-specific troubleshooting.
