Can't Sign In to the Dropbox App? Get Back Into Your Account
The Dropbox app or website won’t let you in — your password is rejected, a code never arrives, or you get an account error.
Why: Sign-in fails most often because of a mistyped or expired password, a one-time security code Dropbox emailed after a suspicious attempt, a 2-step verification snag, or a work/school account your admin changed.
Fix 1: Confirm the email and reset the password
Start with the most common cause — the credentials themselves.
- Double-check you’re typing the exact email that owns the account, and that Caps Lock is off.
- If the password is rejected, go to dropbox.com/forgot and request a reset link.
- Open the email, set a new password, then sign in to the desktop app: click the Dropbox icon → avatar → Preferences → Account, click Sign in, and enter the new password.
- If you normally use Google or Apple to sign in, use that same button rather than a password.
Fix 2: Enter the one-time security code Dropbox emailed
A blocked-looking login is often Dropbox protecting your account.
- Check the inbox of your account email for a message from Dropbox with a one-time security code — this appears when Dropbox detects an unusual sign-in.
- Enter that code where prompted to confirm it’s really you, then continue signing in.
- No code? Check spam, and make sure you’re checking the right email address.
Fix 3: Work around a 2-step verification problem
If you can’t get past the 2-step verification screen, use a backup method.
- On the code screen, click Having trouble getting a code?
- Choose an option you set up earlier:
- Enter the emergency backup code you saved when turning on 2-step verification.
- Text my backup phone if you added a second number.
- Send me a notification to approve from a device where you’re already signed in.
- If you’ve lost all of these, use your recovery email to receive codes, or contact Dropbox support to regain access.
Fix 4: Check work/school account status and reinstall
If it’s a Dropbox team account, your admin’s settings can block you.
- If you see an account error, your admin may have suspended or removed your account, or required single sign-on (SSO) — with SSO you enter your email and no password. Contact your IT admin to confirm.
- On the website, clear your browser cache or try a private/incognito window to rule out a stale session.
- For the desktop app, make sure it’s the latest version (reinstall from dropbox.com/install if needed), then sign in again.
