Zoom Stuck on "Connecting" or Won't Let You Join a Meeting
You click a Zoom link and it sits on “Connecting…” forever, or the browser launch page never hands off to the app.
Why: Usually the desktop client isn’t installed (or is broken), or the meeting ID/passcode is wrong. Working around the link by joining manually almost always gets you in.
Fix 1: Join manually by meeting ID
Skip the link entirely — this dodges a stuck browser hand-off.
- Open the Zoom desktop app and sign in.
- On the Home tab, click Join.
- Type the meeting ID (the 9–11 digit number from the invite), then enter the passcode when prompted.
If you don’t have the app open at all, that’s the problem — see Fix 2.
Fix 2: Install (or update) the Zoom desktop app
If you’ve only been joining through the browser and it keeps failing, installing the client usually fixes it.
- Go to the official Zoom Download Center and download Zoom Workplace for your operating system.
- Install it, sign in, then use Join from the Home tab as in Fix 1.
- Already installed? Update it: profile picture > Check for Updates, install any update, and restart Zoom.
Fix 3: Try a standard reinstall first
If the app still hangs, quit it and use the standard uninstall for your operating system:
- Windows: open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, select Zoom Workplace, and choose Uninstall. macOS: open Zoom, choose Zoom Workplace → Uninstall Zoom Workplace from the menu bar, and confirm. For Linux, follow Zoom’s distribution-specific removal instructions in the source below.
- Restart your computer.
- Reinstall the latest client from the official Download Center, sign in, and rejoin.
Optional Windows-only full removal with CleanZoom
Before running CleanZoom: Zoom warns that it removes cryptographic keys as well as local settings. You can permanently lose access to end-to-end encrypted Zoom Mail messages and Zoom Phone voicemails with Advanced Encryption unless a suitable backup key or account escrow is available. Confirm your recovery options with your Zoom administrator first. Use the standard uninstall above if you cannot confirm them.
If a full removal is still needed, download CleanZoom only from Zoom’s uninstall instructions, run it on Windows, then restart and reinstall. It also removes the Zoom plugin for Outlook. Do not substitute manual Keychain/key deletion on macOS; Zoom gives the same encrypted-data warning for that operation.
Fix 4: Confirm the meeting details are valid
If only one specific meeting won’t connect, the ID or passcode may be wrong or the meeting may not have started.
- Contact the host and ask them to re-send the correct meeting ID and passcode.
- Confirm the meeting is actually live — you can’t join before the host opens it if join-before-host is off.
FAQ
Everything connects except one meeting. That’s a meeting-details problem (Fix 4), not your app — get a fresh ID and passcode from the host.
It worked yesterday and now hangs on Connecting. Update the client (Fix 2); if that doesn’t help, try the standard reinstall (Fix 3). Review the encrypted-data warning before considering CleanZoom.
Do I have to use the app? No, but the desktop client is the most reliable way past a stuck browser launch page.
