Spotify Songs Greyed Out or Unavailable? How to Fix It

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 3 min read April 27, 2026 · by Ryan Bennett

Some tracks in your playlists or albums appear dimmed (greyed out) and won’t play when you tap them.

Why: A greyed-out song almost always means one of four things — you’re in offline mode and haven’t downloaded it, your explicit-content filter is blocking it, the track isn’t licensed in your region, or your account’s country is out of date. Check these fastest-first.

Fix 1: Turn off offline mode

In offline mode, every song you haven’t downloaded is greyed out.

  • Mobile/tablet: Tap Home, then the gear (Settings) > Playback, and turn Offline off.
  • Desktop: Open the menu and make sure Offline mode is not ticked (also under Settings > Playback in newer builds).

Reconnect to the internet and the greyed tracks should light up again.

Fix 2: Allow explicit content

When the explicit filter is on, “anything with an explicit tag is grayed out… and it’s automatically skipped” — Spotify’s own wording.

  1. Mobile/tablet: Tap Settings > Explicit Content (or Content & Display) and turn Allow Explicit Content on.
  2. Desktop: Open Settings and turn Allow explicit content on.
  3. If you’re on a Premium Family plan and someone else manages it, the filter may be locked from the plan manager’s account page — they’ll need to switch it on for your profile.

Fix 3: Check region and the 14-day / 30-day rules

Tracks can grey out because of where your account is registered.

  1. A song may simply be not available in your market due to licensing — that’s set by the rights holder and can’t be forced.
  2. If you’ve been abroad more than 14 days, playback stops until you update your account’s country. Go to your account page > Edit profile > Country/Region and set it to where you now live.
  3. Make sure your account has been online at least once in the last 30 days, or offline downloads expire and grey out.

Fix 4: Log out and back in, then reinstall

If the song should be playable but stays grey, refresh the app.

  1. Log out (Settings > scroll down > Log out), close Spotify, reopen it, and log back in.
  2. Still grey? Reinstall the app (uninstall, restart the device, reinstall from your official store or spotify.com/download). You’ll need to re-download offline music afterward.
  3. To confirm it’s the app and not the track, test the same song on the web player (open.spotify.com) or another device.

FAQ

Why is only one song greyed out and the rest fine? That track is most likely region-restricted, removed by the rights holder, or blocked by your explicit filter — the surrounding songs playing fine rules out your connection.

I turned off the explicit filter but songs are still grey. Restart the app after changing the setting. If they’re still dimmed, check offline mode (Fix 1) and your account region (Fix 3).

Do greyed-out downloads come back? Yes — once your account goes online within the 30-day window, expired offline downloads become available again. Just reconnect and let Spotify sync.
