Slack Huddle Audio or Mic Not Working? Get Heard Again

You join a Slack huddle and either can’t hear anyone, or no one can hear you.

Why: Almost always it’s the wrong input/output device selected, or Slack hasn’t been granted microphone permission by your operating system. There’s also a well-known Windows quirk where Slack ignores headsets that aren’t the system default.

Fix 1: Restart, then check your devices

1. Quit and reopen the Slack desktop app (or refresh the browser tab). If audio still misbehaves, restart your computer.
2. In a huddle, open the ⋮ (more) menu and go to your audio settings (or Preferences → Audio & video).
3. Confirm the correct Microphone and Speaker are selected — not a disconnected webcam mic or HDMI output.
4. Test your mic: speak a few words and watch the voice meter. If it doesn’t move, pick a different option from the microphone dropdown. Click Test on the speaker to hear a chime.

Fix 2: Grant Slack microphone permission

If the meter never moves no matter which mic you pick, the OS is blocking access.

On macOS:

1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
2. Find Slack in the list and turn its toggle on.
3. If it’s already on, toggle it off and back on, then fully quit and reopen Slack.

On Windows 10/11:

1. Open Settings → Privacy (& security) → Microphone.
2. Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
3. Scroll to the Microsoft Store / desktop app list and make sure Slack is turned on.

Fix 3: Fix the Windows default-device issue

There’s a known Windows issue where Slack can’t use a headset unless it’s set as the system default:

1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and choose Sound settings (or open Settings → System → Sound).
2. Under Choose where to play sound (output) and Input, set your headset/mic as the device.
3. For older builds, open the classic Sound control panel, right-click your device on the Recording and Playback tabs, and choose Set as Default Device / Set as Default Communication Device.
4. Rejoin the huddle. Also confirm your audio drivers are up to date.

Audio works in other apps but not Slack. That’s the permission issue — re-check Fix 2 and toggle Slack’s microphone access off and on.

I can hear others but they can’t hear me. Your speaker is fine, so it’s a mic problem: confirm you’re not muted in the huddle, the right microphone is selected (Fix 1), and Slack has mic permission (Fix 2).

Does the browser version need anything extra? Yes — your browser must allow microphone access for Slack. Click the mic/lock icon in the address bar and set Slack to Allow.
