Steam "Missing File Privileges" Error When Installing or Updating

A download or update stops and Steam shows an error containing “Missing File Privileges.”

Why: Steam couldn’t write the files to your library folder — usually broken folder permissions or antivirus blocking the write. Steam’s update-and-installation troubleshooting fixes this without reinstalling the game.

Fix 1: Repair the library folder

Steam library folders must be writable; when those permissions break, repairing them restores access.

Open Steam > Settings from the top-left menu.
Go to the Storage tab.
Select the drive/library folder where the game installs, click the … (three-dot) menu, and choose Repair Folder.
Approve the Windows admin prompt if it appears, then resume the download.

Fix 2: Clear the download cache

A bad cache entry can cause the same write error every time. This doesn’t remove installed games.

Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
Click Clear Download Cache, then Confirm.
Log back into Steam and try the download again.

Fix 3: Stop antivirus or firewall from blocking the write

Security software often blocks Steam from writing into its folder, which surfaces as this error.

Temporarily disable third-party antivirus and try the install/update again.
If that works, add your Steam and steamapps folders as exclusions so the antivirus stops interfering.
Confirm the same in any firewall — Steam needs permission to download and write.

Fix 4: Verify files, or move the library

If it still fails, the existing files or the drive itself may be the problem.

Right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files to repair what’s already there.
If a specific drive keeps failing, create a new library folder on another drive (Settings > Storage > add a drive) and install there.
