Zoom Echo or Audio Feedback: How to Stop That Ringing Loop

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 2 min read February 22, 2026 · by Ryan Bennett

Your Zoom meeting has an echo, a ringing squeal, or you hear your own voice come back at you.

Why: Echo is a feedback loop — a microphone is picking up sound coming out of a nearby speaker and sending it back. Zoom names three causes: someone joined with both computer and phone audio, speakers and a mic are too close together, or two devices with active audio are in the same room.

Fix 1: Have everyone wear headphones

This is the single most effective fix and it stops the loop at the source.

  • Headphones or earbuds keep speaker sound out of the microphone, so there’s nothing to loop back.
  • It only takes one person on open speakers to cause echo for the whole meeting, so the more people on headphones, the better.

Fix 2: Join with only one audio source per person

If someone dialed in by phone and joined with computer audio, those two paths echo each other.

  1. Pick one — computer audio or phone — not both.
  2. To drop the extra path on mobile, tap More in the meeting controls and choose Disconnect Audio, then rejoin with a single source.
  3. On a laptop using built-in mic + built-in speakers, lower the speaker volume or switch to headphones so the mic stops hearing the output.

Fix 3: Only one device with audio per room

When two laptops in the same conference room both have audio on, they feed each other — and muting is not enough, because muting kills the mic but the speaker is still playing.

  1. Decide on one device to carry the room’s audio.
  2. On every other device in the room, Disconnect Audio (or Leave Computer Audio) — don’t just mute it.
  3. Keep that one audio device’s speaker at a sensible volume, away from its own mic.

FAQ

Why didn’t muting the second laptop fix it? Muting only silences the microphone. The speaker keeps playing the meeting audio, which the live device’s mic still picks up — so the loop continues. You have to disconnect the audio, not mute.

The echo only started when one person joined. That person is almost certainly on open speakers with the mic live (Fix 1) or joined twice (Fix 2). As host, you can mute them while you sort it out.

Can the host fix this for everyone? The host can mute participants one at a time to find the source, but the lasting fix is headphones and one audio source per person/room.
