Zoom Microphone Not Working: Fix It When Others Can't Hear You
You’re talking in a Zoom meeting but everyone says they can’t hear you.
Why: Almost always one of three things — you’re muted, Zoom is listening to the wrong microphone, or Windows/macOS is blocking Zoom from using the mic at all.
Fix 1: Unmute and confirm Zoom is hearing you
The fastest check, right inside the meeting.
- Look at the bottom-left of the meeting window. If the mic icon has a red line through it, you’re muted — click it once to unmute. (You can also press and hold the spacebar to talk while muted.)
- Click the ^ arrow next to the Mute / Unmute button and choose Test Speaker & Microphone.
- When it asks about the microphone, talk normally — Zoom plays your voice back to you and shows an Input Level bar moving. If the bar moves, your mic works and the right device is selected.
If the bar doesn’t move, move on to Fix 2.
Fix 2: Select the correct microphone in Zoom Audio settings
Zoom often grabs the wrong input after you plug in a headset or webcam.
- Click your profile picture (top-right) > Settings > the Audio tab. (In a meeting: the ^ arrow next to Mute > Audio Settings.)
- Under Microphone, open the dropdown and pick your actual mic (your headset or USB device, not “Internal Microphone” if you’re wearing headphones).
- Speak — the Input Level meter should jump. If it’s too quiet, untick Automatically adjust microphone volume and raise the Input Volume slider.
- On Windows, if you hear a robotic or cut-out voice, click Audio Profile / advanced audio and turn off Signal processing by Windows audio device drivers.
Fix 3: Give Zoom permission to use the microphone (Windows / Mac)
If the dropdown shows your mic but the level never moves, the operating system is blocking it.
Windows 11: Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, then Let apps access your microphone, and make sure Let desktop apps access your microphone is on at the bottom.
macOS: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, and toggle zoom.us on. Quit and reopen Zoom afterward.
Then close any other app that grabs the mic — Teams, Discord, OBS, or a browser tab — since only one app can hold the microphone at a time. Restart the meeting and run the test in Fix 1 again.
FAQ
Others heard me yesterday but not today — what changed? Usually a Windows update reset mic permissions, or you plugged in a new headset that Zoom didn’t auto-select. Re-check Fix 2 and Fix 3.
The Input Level bar moves but people still can’t hear me. That’s a sending problem, not a mic problem — leave and rejoin with computer audio, and confirm you didn’t accidentally Disconnect Audio from the More menu.
Do I need to restart Zoom after changing permissions? Yes. Permission changes only take effect after you fully quit and relaunch the Zoom client.
