Can't Log In to Spotify? How to Get Back Into Your Account
Spotify rejects your password, doesn’t recognise your email, or you simply can’t remember which details you used to sign up.
Why: Most login trouble comes down to a forgotten or wrong password, signing up originally with a third party (Apple, Google, Facebook, Samsung) instead of an email/password, or being logged into a second account you forgot you had. Work through these in order.
Fix 1: Reset your password
If your password is rejected, reset it — this is the fastest fix.
- Go to spotify.com/password-reset.
- Enter the email address on your account and submit. Spotify only sends the reset email to a registered address.
- Open the email from Spotify and follow the link to set a new password.
- Return to the app and log in with your email and the new password.
Fix 2: Find the right account if you forgot your email or username
It’s common to have an old account under a different email.
- On the spotify.com/password-reset page, enter each email address you own, one at a time. A reset email only arrives for an address that has a Spotify account, so this tells you which one is registered.
- Search your inboxes for past emails from Spotify — they reveal which address an account is tied to.
- If you log in but your Premium, playlists, or saved music are missing, you’re probably on the wrong account — log out and sign in with the other one.
Fix 3: Use the right login method (Apple, Google, Facebook, Samsung)
If you originally signed up with a third party, an email/password login won’t work.
- On the login screen, choose the matching button: Continue with Apple / Google / Facebook, or the Samsung option if you used that.
- If you’re not sure which you used, try each — the one tied to your account will log you straight in.
- Note: you can’t use a phone number to log in to the desktop app. Set an email and password on your account, then use those on desktop.
Fix 4: Handle 2-step verification and “too many attempts”
If your account has extra verification turned on, these messages have specific fixes.
- If you can’t get the code from a text or authenticator app, choose “Want to log in another way?” and enter one of your backup codes.
- If you see “Too many attempts, please try again later,” wait 30 minutes before trying again — repeated attempts only extend the lockout.
- Still stuck after that? Reset the password again (Fix 1) and try with fresh credentials.
FAQ
My password works on the website but not the app. Update the app to the latest version and restart it. If it still fails, log out fully and sign in again with the freshly reset password.
I have Premium but the app shows Free. You’re almost certainly logged into a second, free account. Log out and sign back in with the email tied to your subscription (find it via the password-reset trick in Fix 2).
Why won’t my phone number log me into the desktop app? Phone-number login isn’t supported on desktop. Add an email and password to your account and use those instead.
