Office Says "Unlicensed Product"? How to Fix the Microsoft 365 Activation Error

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 3 min read March 21, 2025 · by Ryan Bennett

Your Office apps show “Unlicensed Product” (or “Product Notice”) in red across the top, the ribbon is mostly greyed out, and you can open files but not edit them.

Why: Office checks your subscription periodically. When that check fails it disables editing and shows the banner. The cause is almost always one of a handful of things: you’re signed in with the wrong Microsoft account, the subscription actually expired, a second copy of Office is fighting the licensed one, or a permission/clock problem is blocking the activation handshake. Work the list fastest-first.

Fix 1: Confirm the right account — and that the subscription is active

Office activates against the account that owns the licence, not whatever account you happen to be signed into.

  1. In any Office app, go to File > Account and look under User Information. Note the email shown.
  2. Open your Subscriptions page at account.microsoft.com/services and Sign in with the account you used to buy Microsoft 365.
  3. Check whether the subscription is listed as active or has slipped under a Cancelled subscriptions heading — renew if it expired.
  4. Back in File > Account, if the wrong account is shown, Sign out, then sign back in with the account that holds the subscription.

Fix 2: Run an Office app as administrator once

A one-time elevated launch lets Office write the licence tokens it may have been blocked from saving.

  1. Close all Office apps.
  2. Right-click an app icon (for example Word) and choose Run as administrator, then Yes at the prompt.
  3. Let it activate, then close it and reopen normally. If the banner is gone, you’re done.

Fix 3: Fix the clock, then remove duplicate installs

Activation uses certificates that fail validation if your clock is wrong, and a second Office install causes licence conflicts.

  1. Clock: right-click the time in the taskbar, choose Adjust date and time, and turn on Set time automatically (and Set time zone automatically).
  2. Duplicates: open Control Panel > Programs and Features, search for office, and Uninstall any version you don’t intend to use (for example an old Office 2016 alongside Microsoft 365). Restart the PC.

Fix 4: Run the activation troubleshooter / Support and Recovery Assistant

If it still won’t activate, let Microsoft’s tool diagnose it.

  1. On Windows 10 or later, run the built-in Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter (linked from the support page below), or install the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA).
  2. In SaRA, choose Office & Office Apps, pick the activation issue, and follow the prompts — it resets the licensing state and removes stale tokens automatically.
  3. If a firewall, antivirus, or corporate proxy is blocking activation servers, temporarily disable it (or have IT allow the activation endpoints) and retry.

FAQ

It says “Unlicensed Product” but I just paid. Give it a few minutes online, then in File > Account select the reactivate/update prompt. If nothing appears, confirm the same account that paid is the one signed into Office (Fix 1) — paying on one account and signing in with another is the most common trap.

Can I still use my files in the meantime? Yes. In reduced-functionality mode you can open and print documents but not edit them. You can also edit for free in the browser at Office.com while you sort out activation.

This is a work PC. Then the licence is managed by your organization — if Fixes 1–4 don’t clear it, contact your IT help desk, as they may need to reassign the licence to your account.
