Mic or Camera Not Working in a Microsoft Teams Meeting? How to Get Seen and Heard

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 3 min read November 9, 2025 · by Ryan Bennett

You join a Teams meeting and nobody can hear you, or your camera shows a black square (or nothing at all) while everyone else is on video.

Why: The most common causes are mundane: you’re still muted, a physical mute switch on a headset is engaged, Windows is blocking app access to the mic or camera, or Teams is pointed at the wrong device (the laptop’s built-in mic instead of your headset, for example). Another app holding the camera open also blocks Teams.

Fix 1: Check the mute button and in-meeting device

Start inside the meeting — this resolves most cases in seconds:

  1. Look at the Mic icon in the meeting controls. If it has a line through it you’re muted — select Unmute mic.
  2. Check for a physical mute: many headsets mute when the boom arm is rotated up, and external mics often have their own mute button.
  3. Select the dropdown arrow next to Mic, then More actions → Audio settings (in some builds, More audio settings).
  4. Confirm the correct Microphone and Camera are selected from the dropdowns — not a disconnected or virtual device.

Fix 2: Give Teams permission in Windows

If Windows is blocking access, Teams shows no device at all:

Microphone:

  1. Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
  2. Turn on Microphone access.
  3. Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
  4. Scroll down and turn on the Microsoft Teams (work or school) toggle.

Camera:

  1. Open Settings → Privacy & security → Camera.
  2. Turn on Let apps access your camera, then turn on the Microsoft Teams toggle.
  3. If it’s already on, toggle it off and back on — that often re-establishes a stuck connection.

Fix 3: Free the camera and run a test call

A webcam can only be used by one app at a time:

  1. Close other apps that may hold the camera or mic — Zoom, Skype, the Camera app, or a browser tab on a video site.
  2. If you use an external webcam or USB mic, unplug it and plug it back in; for Bluetooth headsets, make sure they aren’t connected to your phone at the same time.
  3. Run Teams’ built-in check: Settings → Devices → Make a test call. Follow the Test Call Bot, record a short message, and Teams plays it back and summarizes whether your mic, speaker, and camera worked.

Fix 4: Update Teams and Windows

An out-of-date client or webcam driver is a frequent culprit:

  1. In Teams, select your avatar (top-right) → Check for updates, then restart Teams.
  2. Install pending Windows updates (Settings → Windows Update), which also deliver camera/audio driver fixes.

FAQ

My camera shows black but the light is on. Another app grabbed it first, or a privacy shutter is closed. Close other video apps and check for a physical webcam cover.

It works in the browser but not the desktop app. That points to the desktop app’s Windows permissions or device selection (Fixes 1–2), since the browser handles camera/mic access separately.

I’m on the web version (Edge/Chrome). The browser must allow the site to use your camera and mic. In Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Camera / Microphone and allow teams.microsoft.com.
