Your title bar says [Compatibility Mode] and some Word features look greyed out — you want to convert the file to the modern format and unlock everything.

Why: When you open an older file (typically a .doc from Word 2003 or earlier), Word switches on Compatibility Mode, which disables newer features so the file still works in old versions. Converting it to the current .docx format clears those limits.

Step 1: Confirm you’re in Compatibility Mode

Look at the title bar at the top of the window. If it shows the file name followed by [Compatibility Mode], the document is running with the older feature set.

Step 2: Convert with File > Info > Convert

This upgrades the current file in place.

Go to the File tab.
Select Info.
Click Convert.
If prompted that the layout may change, click OK.

The Convert command clears the compatibility options so the document behaves as if it had been created in the current version of Word. Save the file afterward (Ctrl+S) to keep the change.

Step 3: Or keep the old file and Save As a copy

If you’d rather not touch the original, save a fresh .docx copy instead.

Go to File > Save As and choose a location.
In the Save as type drop-down, select Word Document (*.docx).
Make sure Maintain compatibility with previous versions of Word is unchecked.
Give it a name and click Save.
