How to Record a Microsoft Teams Meeting and Find the Recording After
You want to record a Teams meeting and then find the video afterward.
Why: Teams captures audio, video, and shared screens to the cloud, then saves the file automatically. Recordings land in the meeting organizer’s OneDrive (or SharePoint for channel meetings) and a link appears in the meeting chat. You need the right license and an admin who has enabled recording.
Step 1: Start the recording
- Join or start the meeting.
- In your meeting controls, select More actions → Record and transcribe → Start recording.
- Select Confirm. Everyone in the meeting is notified automatically that recording has started.
For audio only, open More options in that menu and choose the Audio only option before confirming.
Step 2: Stop the recording
- In meeting controls, select More actions → Record and transcribe.
- Choose Stop recording to end the recording (and transcription), or Stop transcription to keep recording without the live transcript.
The recording also stops automatically when the meeting ends and everyone leaves. The organizer doesn’t need to be present for it to keep running.
Step 3: Find the recording afterward
- Open the meeting chat (or the channel conversation if it was a channel meeting) — the recording link appears right in the thread.
- From your Calendar, open the past meeting’s details, where the recording is also listed.
- The file itself is stored in the meeting organizer’s OneDrive for work or school (or in SharePoint for channel meetings). Open it there to play, share, or download.
FAQ
Why can’t I start a recording? You need a qualifying license (such as Office 365 E1/E3/E5/F3, A1/A3/A5, or Microsoft 365 Business/Premium), recording must be enabled by your IT admin, and you can’t be a guest or external participant — guests and people from other organizations can’t record.
Who can press record? The meeting organizer and people in the same organization can start and stop recording. People from a different org, guests, and anonymous joiners cannot.
The recording isn’t in my OneDrive. Recordings save to the organizer’s OneDrive, not every participant’s. If you weren’t the organizer, get the link from the meeting chat instead.
