Teams Screen Sharing Not Working? Fix Can't Share or a Black Screen

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 3 min read April 7, 2026 · by Ryan Bennett

You’re in a Teams meeting and screen sharing won’t work — the Share button does nothing, you can’t find it, or other people see a black box instead of your screen.

Why: On a Mac, Teams (or your browser) needs explicit screen-recording permission before it can capture your display. On the web, only certain browsers are supported. And a common cause of the “black screen” is a docking-station or graphics conflict that stops Teams from capturing the picture.

Fix 1: Find and use the Share button

In your meeting controls at the top of the window, select Share (the icon of a screen with an arrow). Then choose to present your entire screen or a specific window. If Share is missing, you may have been joined as an attendee without sharing rights — ask the organizer to make you a presenter in the meeting roster.

Fix 2: Grant screen-recording permission on a Mac

macOS blocks screen capture until you allow it, which is the most common reason a Mac shows a black screen or nothing at all:

  1. In the meeting, select Share. If Teams shows a prompt, select Allow.
  2. If you need to set it manually, go to the Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  3. Under Screen & System Audio Recording, turn on the toggle for Microsoft Teams.
  4. Quit and reopen Teams (macOS often requires a restart of the app for the new permission to take effect), then try sharing again.

If you’re on Teams in a browser on a Mac, grant the same permission to your browser (for example, Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge) in that same list.

Fix 3: Use a supported browser on the web

In Teams for web you can only share your screen using Google Chrome or the latest version of Microsoft Edge. Linux isn’t currently supported for screen sharing. If sharing fails in another browser, switch to Chrome or Edge, or use the Teams desktop app.

Fix 4: Clear up the black-screen causes

A black or frozen share is usually a capture conflict:

  1. Update to the latest version of Teams and, on a Mac, the latest macOS version.
  2. Close unused apps to free up memory and graphics resources, then try sharing again.
  3. If you use a DisplayLink or other docking station, there’s a known issue affecting the sharing indicator and control bar — disconnect the dock or share from the laptop’s built-in display to test.
  4. Try sharing a single window instead of your entire screen; if the window shares cleanly, the black screen was a full-display capture conflict.

FAQ

The Share button is greyed out. You’re likely an attendee, not a presenter. Ask the organizer to change your role, or check the meeting options if you’re the organizer.

My shared video has no sound. When you share, turn on Include sound (the audio toggle in the share tray) so system audio is sent along with the picture.

It works in the app but not the browser. Use Chrome or Edge for web sharing and grant the browser screen-recording permission on a Mac — Safari and other browsers aren’t supported for Teams screen sharing.
