QuickBooks Error 12152: Fix the Update Internet-Connection Failure
You try to update QuickBooks or the payroll tax table and it stops with “Error 12152” (one of the 12xxx update errors).
Why: QuickBooks couldn’t connect to Intuit’s update servers. It’s almost always local — incorrect internet/browser settings, a wrong system clock, or a firewall/antivirus blocking the connection. None of it touches your data; you’re just restoring QuickBooks’ path to the internet.
Fix 1: Confirm you can reach secure sites, then check the clock
- Open a browser (Chrome/Edge) and load a secure page such as your bank’s sign-in. If that fails, fix general internet connectivity first — QuickBooks can’t update without it.
- Right-click the taskbar clock → Adjust date and time → turn on Set time automatically. A wrong date/time silently blocks the secure update connection.
- Retry: Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Update Now → tick Reset Update → Get Updates.
Fix 2: Reset QuickBooks internet connection settings
- In QuickBooks: Help → Internet Connection Setup.
- Choose Use my computer’s Internet connection settings to establish a connection when this application accesses the Internet → Next.
- Click Advanced Connection Settings → on the Advanced tab, click Restore Advanced Settings → OK.
- Click Done, then run the update again.
Fix 3: Clear firewall and antivirus blocks
A 12xxx error is the classic signature of security software blocking the update.
- Add QuickBooks as an allowed/safe program in your antivirus and firewall.
- Make sure the firewall ports QuickBooks uses for updates, tax-table downloads, and sending payroll data are open.
- To test quickly, temporarily disable the security app, run the update, then re-enable it. If the update succeeds while disabled, the fix is a permanent firewall/antivirus exception — not leaving protection off.
Fix 4: Update in Safe Mode with Networking
If the connection still won’t establish, a third-party driver or service is interfering.
- Start Windows in Safe Mode with Networking.
- Open QuickBooks and run Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Get Updates.
- If it succeeds there, the culprit is a startup program/antivirus in normal mode — exclude QuickBooks or update during Selective Startup.
FAQ
Is 12152 a payroll-specific error? No — it’s a general 12xxx update-connection error that shows up for both program updates and payroll tax-table downloads. The fix is identical because both use the same secure connection to Intuit.
Do I need to reinstall QuickBooks? Rarely. 12152 is a connection problem, not a damaged install. Work through internet settings, the clock, and firewall first; reinstalling is a last resort.
Could a download accelerator cause this? Yes. Download-accelerator or proxy tools interfere with the update stream — disable them before retrying.
