QuickBooks Payroll Error 30159: Fix the Subscription/EIN Validation Failure
You try to use or add a payroll subscription and QuickBooks stops with “Error 30159: QuickBooks is unable to verify the EIN that you used.”
Why: QuickBooks can’t match your company file (its EIN) against an active payroll subscription on Intuit’s servers. The most common local cause is a stale or corrupted paysub.ini registry file. Refresh it and re-validate your subscription.
Direct-deposit users: if you process direct deposit, do not work through these file steps on your own — contact Intuit Payroll Support so account changes don’t disrupt pending DD runs.
Fix 1: Update QuickBooks and re-download the payroll update
- Close company files. Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Update Now → tick Reset Update → Get Updates. Reopen and install when prompted.
- Employees → Get Payroll Updates → tick Download Entire Update → Update.
A simple update + reset clears 30159 when the cause was a single bad download.
Fix 2: Rename the paysub.ini file (the core 30159 fix)
paysub.ini is a small registry file QuickBooks rebuilds from the server every time you sync. Renaming it forces a clean rebuild.
- Close QuickBooks completely.
- Search your drive for paysub.ini (it’s usually under the QuickBooks install folder or the company-file folder). Show hidden files if it doesn’t appear.
- Right-click each paysub.ini → Rename. Add a letter or number, e.g. paysub.ini.OLD or paysub1.ini — Windows won’t allow two with the same name, so give each one a unique new name.
- Reopen QuickBooks.
Renaming paysub.ini does not affect the other tax IDs already on your account — QuickBooks re-downloads the file on the next sync.
Fix 3: Re-validate through Payroll Account Maintenance, then reboot
- Employees → My Payroll Service → Account/Billing Information (this opens QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Account Maintenance).
- Confirm the payroll service shows Active, then close the page. Simply opening and closing it re-validates your subscription online against your EIN.
- Reboot the computer.
- Run Employees → Get Payroll Updates → Download Entire Update once more.
Fix 4: Clean install in Selective Startup (last resort)
If 30159 survives the steps above, a damaged install is interfering. Do a clean reinstall of QuickBooks while Windows is in Selective Startup (msconfig → Selective startup), then re-validate via Account Maintenance.
FAQ
Does renaming paysub.ini delete payroll data or other EINs? No. It’s only a downloaded registry file. Your company data and every tax ID already on the subscription stay intact, and the file is recreated on the next connection to the payroll server.
I’m on direct deposit — can I still try this? Stop and call Intuit Payroll Support first. DD funds and lead times can be affected by subscription re-validation, so let Intuit confirm your account state before changing files.
Is 30159 the same as a PS error? No. PSXXX errors are about installing the tax-table update; 30159 is specifically about validating your subscription/EIN against your file.
