QuickBooks Update Error 12007, 12029, 12031: Can't Connect to Update — Fixed
Errors 12007, 12029, and 12031 (and the related 12002 / 12009) appear when QuickBooks Desktop tries to download an update and can’t connect to the internet. The data is fine — something between QuickBooks and Intuit’s servers is being blocked.
Why: Incorrect browser/SSL security settings, an antivirus or firewall blocking the connection, a network timeout, or a system that isn’t using TLS 1.2 for secure connections.
Fix 1: Confirm the computer can reach secure sites
- Open a browser (Chrome, Edge) and load a secure page — e.g. your bank’s sign-in page.
- If it won’t load, the problem is your internet connection itself: restart your router/modem and retry the update once it’s back.
- If secure sites load fine, move to Fix 2.
Fix 2: Run the TLS 1.2 readiness utility
QuickBooks needs TLS 1.2 for secure connections; older systems may have it disabled.
- Close QuickBooks.
- Download and run Intuit’s QuickBooks TLS 1.2 Utility (linked from the official article below) and choose Run.
- Accept the prompts and let it set the secure-connection settings, then restart QuickBooks and retry Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Update Now → Get Updates.
Fix 3: Reset the QuickBooks update and download in single-user mode
- In QuickBooks: File → Switch to Single-user Mode.
- Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Update Now.
- Tick Reset Update, then click Get Updates to clear partial downloads and pull the update fresh.
- Close and reopen QuickBooks when it asks to install the update.
Fix 4: Allow QuickBooks through firewall and antivirus
If a security app is blocking the connection:
- Configure your Windows Firewall and any third-party internet-security/firewall app to allow QuickBooks — add the
.exefiles (e.g.QBW32.exe,QBUpdate.exe) and the QuickBooks ports. - Temporarily disable third-party antivirus, retry the update, and if it works, add QuickBooks to that product’s exclusions.
Fix 5: Try Safe Mode with Networking
- Restart Windows into Safe Mode with Networking.
- Retry the QuickBooks update there. If it succeeds, a startup program (usually security software) was the blocker — set its exclusions, then reboot normally.
FAQ
Which file path? Make sure the company file is in single-user mode before resetting the update (Fix 3) — multi-user can hold the update open.
Old QuickBooks version? Update connection errors are far more common on unsupported releases; if you’re several years behind, the TLS utility (Fix 2) is the key step.
