QuickBooks Error 6190, 816 (and 6189, 816): Multi-User File Access — Fixed

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 2 min read February 11, 2025 · by Ryan Bennett

Error 6190, 816 (often paired with 6189, 816) appears when QuickBooks tries to access the company file and reports a mismatch — it is a multi-user network problem, not damaged data. It usually means the .qbw and its transaction log are out of sync, or two computers are fighting over the file.

Why: The transaction log (.TLG) doesn’t match the company file (.qbw) — common when a single user opens the file directly on the server while it’s hosted, when a backup was restored over a live file, or when the network data (.ND) file is stale.

Fix 1: Repair hosting with Database Server Manager

  1. Install the QuickBooks Tool Hub on the server (the computer that stores the file).
  2. Open the Tool Hub → Network IssuesQuickBooks Database Server Manager.
  3. Click Start Scan (or Browse to the folder holding your .qbw, then Start Scan). This auto-repairs firewall permissions and re-registers the file for multi-user access.
  4. When the scan finishes, reopen QuickBooks on the server, then on each workstation.

Fix 2: Rename the .ND and .TLG files

These rebuild automatically, so this is safe and resolves the .TLG-mismatch cause directly.

  1. On the server, open the folder containing your .qbw.
  2. Find the matching files ending in .ND and .TLG.
  3. Right-click each → Rename → add .OLD (e.g. MyCompany.qbw.TLG.OLD).
  4. Reopen the company file on the server first so the files rebuild, then connect the workstations.

Fix 3: Toggle multi-user hosting on the server

  1. On the host, open the company file and go to File → Open or Restore Company if it’s closed.
  2. Choose File → Utilities. If it shows Host Multi-User Access, the file isn’t hosted — turn it on.
  3. If it shows Stop Hosting Multi-User Access, click that to switch to single-user, then go back to File → Utilities → Host Multi-User Access to switch it on again.
  4. Have workstations reconnect via File → Switch to Multi-user Mode.

Fix 4: Restart server and workstations in order

  1. Restart the server computer hosting the file.
  2. Restart each workstation on the network.
  3. Open QuickBooks on the server first, then on each workstation.

Always keep the company file on the server’s local hard drive — external/USB/NAS drives aren’t designed for multi-user QuickBooks and frequently trigger 6190.

FAQ

Single computer, not a network? Make sure you aren’t restoring a backup on top of a file someone else opened on the server. Use Fix 2 to resync the .TLG.

Still mismatched? This often follows restoring a .qbb over a live .qbw — rename the old .qbw and restore the backup to a clean local folder instead.
