QuickBooks Error 6147, 0: Can't Open Company File or Backup — Fixed

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 2 min read February 8, 2025 · by Ryan Bennett

Error 6147, 0 appears when QuickBooks Desktop tries to open a company file or restore a backup and reports it can’t access the data. It is part of the 6000 family — a file-location or file-damage problem, not lost data. Work these fastest-first.

Why: The error usually means the file path is wrong (the file moved, or the network mapping broke), a damaged .ND (network data) or .TLG (transaction log) file is interfering, or the company file itself has minor damage that File Doctor can repair.

Fix 1: Rename the .ND and .TLG files

These two helper files rebuild automatically, so renaming them is safe and clears a large share of 6147 cases.

  1. Open the folder that holds your .qbw company file (default: C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files).
  2. Find the files with the same name as your company file ending in .ND and .TLG.
  3. Right-click each → Rename → add .OLD to the end (e.g. MyCompany.qbw.ND.OLD).
  4. Reopen QuickBooks and your company file.

This is the same first step used for the 6000-series errors — they are close cousins.

Fix 2: Run QuickBooks File Doctor from the Tool Hub

  1. Install the QuickBooks Tool Hub (close QuickBooks first).
  2. Open the Tool Hub → Company File IssuesRun QuickBooks File Doctor.
  3. Choose your company file from the list (or Browse to it), pick Check your file (middle option only), then Continue.
  4. Enter your QuickBooks admin password and let the scan finish, then reopen the file.

Fix 3: Open or restore the file from a local folder

6147 frequently hits when the file lives on a USB stick, external drive, or a cloud-synced folder (OneDrive/Dropbox), or when you restore a backup directly to one of those.

  1. Copy the .qbw (or the .qbb backup) to a local folder such as C:\QuickBooks\.
  2. In QuickBooks: File → Open or Restore Company. To restore, choose Restore a backup copy and point it at the .qbb in that local folder.
  3. Open the restored file from the local folder.

Removable and synced drives lock the file mid-write, which is exactly what triggers 6147.

Fix 4: Update QuickBooks, then retry

An out-of-date build can mishandle a newer file format. Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Update Now → Get Updates, restart QuickBooks, and try opening the file again.

FAQ

Is my data lost? Almost never. 6147, 0 is a path/access or minor-damage error; Fixes 1–3 recover the file in most cases.

It only happens when restoring a backup. Restore to a short, local path (Fix 3) rather than a network or synced folder.

Multi-user setup? Run the Database Server Manager on the host so the server re-scans the file location.
