QuickBooks Payroll Error PS032 & PS077: "Trouble Installing Your Update" Fix
You start a payroll update and QuickBooks stops with “PS032” or “PS077: QuickBooks is having trouble installing your payroll update.”
Why: both errors mean the same thing — QuickBooks downloaded the payroll tax-table file but can’t install it. The usual culprits are an out-of-date QuickBooks release, a payroll subscription it can’t verify, or a damaged file in the payroll components folder. Work the fixes in order; most people clear it at Fix 1 or 2.
Fix 1: Get the latest QuickBooks release, then the tax table
A QuickBooks release that’s behind often can’t read the newest payroll file.
- Close any open company files. Go to Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Update Now.
- Tick Reset Update, then click Get Updates.
- When it finishes, close and reopen QuickBooks. Click Yes if asked to install the update.
- Now pull the tax table: Employees → Get Payroll Updates → tick Download Entire Update → Update.
If it completes, you’re done. If PS032/PS077 returns, continue.
Fix 2: Confirm your payroll subscription is active and the service key is valid
PS032 and PS077 frequently mean QuickBooks couldn’t verify your subscription.
- Employees → My Payroll Service → Account/Billing Information — sign in and confirm the subscription shows Active.
- Back in QuickBooks: Employees → My Payroll Service → Manage Service Key.
- Check the Service Name is correct and Status reads Active.
- Click Edit, confirm the service key number (correct it if wrong), then Next → Finish. This re-validates the key online without changing your subscription.
- Retry Employees → Get Payroll Updates → Download Entire Update.
Fix 3: Run Quick Fix my Program (and run QuickBooks as admin)
A half-loaded background process or a permissions block stops the install.
- Open the QuickBooks Tool Hub → Program Problems → Quick Fix my Program.
- Reopen QuickBooks. If it still fails, close QuickBooks, right-click the desktop icon → Run as administrator.
- Temporarily turn off antivirus/UAC if your security tool is known to block Intuit installers, then retry the update.
Fix 4: Rename the CPS folder (for a damaged update file)
If a download went bad, the broken file lives in the CPS folder. Renaming it forces QuickBooks to rebuild a clean copy.
- Close QuickBooks. Open your install folder, e.g.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks YEAR\Components\Payroll\CPS. - Right-click the CPS folder → Rename → type CPSOLD → Enter.
- Reopen QuickBooks and run Employees → Get Payroll Updates → Download Entire Update again. QuickBooks recreates a fresh CPS folder.
FAQ
Is PS077 different from PS032? Practically no — Intuit groups them as PSXXX install errors and the fixes are identical. PS032 leans toward subscription/components; PS077 often clears with a simple release update and reboot.
Will renaming CPS delete my payroll data? No. CPS holds only the downloaded update components, not your company file or payroll history. QuickBooks rebuilds it on the next download.
This is a PS error, not a 15xxx error — same thing? No. The 15xxx errors are about a Windows service failing to write the update; PSXXX errors are about subscription verification and components.
