AirDrop Not Working Between iPhone and Mac? Requirements and Fixes

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 2 min read October 6, 2025 · by Ryan Bennett

You try to AirDrop a photo or file between your iPhone and Mac, but the other device never appears in the AirDrop sheet.

Why: AirDrop uses both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth together over a short range. If either radio is off, the device is set to receive from “No One,” Personal Hotspot is on, or a VPN is blocking local networking, the two devices can’t find each other.

Fix 1: Confirm both radios are on and the devices are close

AirDrop needs Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on at both ends, with the devices within about 30 feet (10 meters).

  1. On the iPhone, open Control Center and make sure both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on (icons highlighted, not greyed out).
  2. On the Mac, check the menu bar / Control Center that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on.
  3. Bring the two devices near each other and try again.

Fix 2: Set AirDrop to receive from Everyone (or Contacts Only)

If the receiving device is set to Receiving Off / No One, it stays invisible.

  • On the Mac (the receiver): Open a Finder window and click AirDrop in the sidebar (or Control Center → AirDrop). Set “Allow me to be discovered by” to Contacts Only or, to rule out contact-matching issues, Everyone.
  • On the iPhone (the receiver): Open Control Center, press and hold the connectivity card, tap AirDrop, then choose Contacts Only or Everyone for 10 Minutes.

Contacts Only requires both devices signed in to iCloud with each other in Contacts. If that’s flaky, Everyone is the quickest test.

Fix 3: Turn off Personal Hotspot and check your VPN

  1. On the iPhone, go to Settings → Personal Hotspot and turn Allow Others to Join off. An active hotspot disables AirDrop.
  2. If you use a VPN on either device, its configuration may block local networking. Disconnect the VPN and try AirDrop again, or allow local network access in the VPN settings.

Fix 4: Restart both devices

If everything looks right but AirDrop still fails, restart the iPhone and the Mac and try once more. A restart re-initializes the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth stack that AirDrop depends on.

FAQ

Why does my Mac only appear sometimes? With Contacts Only, both devices must be signed in to iCloud and saved in each other’s Contacts. Switch the receiver to Everyone to confirm the hardware works, then fix the contact entry.

Do they need to be on the same Wi-Fi network? No. AirDrop creates its own direct connection using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth — they just both need those radios on. But Personal Hotspot being on will block it.
