AirPlay to Mac or Apple TV Not Working? Requirements and Fixes
You try to mirror your screen or stream video with AirPlay, but the Mac or Apple TV you want never appears in the list, or the connection drops as soon as it starts.
Why: AirPlay sends video and audio over your Wi-Fi network. If the two devices aren’t on the same network, the receiver isn’t turned on, or one of them is running old software, they can’t find each other or the stream won’t hold.
Fix 1: Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network
AirPlay needs the sending and receiving device on the same Wi-Fi network. This is the single most common cause.
- On the Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar and note the network name.
- On the Apple TV, go to Settings > Network and confirm it’s on the same Wi-Fi network (or wired to the same router).
- If you’re streaming between your own devices, sign both in to the same Apple Account — it makes them discover each other more reliably.
A guest network, a work VLAN, or a 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz split on the same router can put the devices on different networks even when the name looks similar.
Fix 2: Turn on the AirPlay Receiver (when streaming to a Mac)
If you’re trying to AirPlay to a Mac, that Mac has to be set to accept it.
- On the receiving Mac, open System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff.
- Turn on AirPlay Receiver.
- Set “Allow AirPlay for” to Everyone (to test) or Anyone on the same network, and enter the password if one is shown on screen.
AirPlay Receiver is available on supported Macs running macOS Monterey or later.
Fix 3: Restart the devices and update software
- Restart the Mac, Apple TV, and your Wi-Fi router.
- Install the latest software on every device: macOS updates on the Mac, and Settings > System > Software Updates on the Apple TV. AirPlay can fail when the two ends are on mismatched versions.
- Try AirPlay again from the Control Center (Mac) or Screen Mirroring card.
Fix 4: Check Home app restrictions and the password prompt
- If the device was set up in the Home app, open Home > Home Settings > Speakers & TV (or the device’s settings) and make sure AirPlay access isn’t restricted to people in your home.
- If you’re asked for a four-digit code when mirroring, enter the code shown on the TV. If you don’t want a code each time, change the AirPlay password requirement in the Apple TV’s AirPlay and HomeKit settings.
FAQ
No sound when AirPlay video plays? Make sure the volume is up and not muted on both the source device and the TV or receiver. Audio is controlled independently from the video stream.
Why does the Mac not appear as an AirPlay target? A Mac only shows up as a receiver after you turn on AirPlay Receiver in System Settings and set “Allow AirPlay for” to a group that includes your device.
