Safari "Can't Open the Page" on Mac? Here's How to Fix It
Safari shows “Safari Can’t Open the Page” or “can’t find the server” when you try to load a website on your Mac.
Why: Safari couldn’t reach the site. The cause is usually one of a few things — a mistyped address, a content blocker or extension breaking the page, a network or VPN problem, or the website itself being down. Work through these fastest-first.
Fix 1: Check the address and reload
- Read the error closely — “can’t find the server” points at the address or your network, while a blank or partial page points at the page itself.
- Check the URL in the address bar for extra or missing characters at the start or end. Retype it if unsure.
- From the menu bar, choose View > Reload Page (or press Command-R).
- If it still won’t load, quit Safari (Command-Q) and reopen it, then try again. The site may simply be busy — wait a minute and retry.
Fix 2: Reload without content blockers
A content blocker or ad blocker can stop a page from loading.
- Click and hold the Reload button at the right of the address field.
- Choose Reload Without Content Blockers.
- If the page now loads, a content blocker is the culprit — turn it off for that site in Safari > Settings > Websites > Content Blockers, or in the blocker’s own settings.
Fix 3: Check your network and VPN
- Try loading another site, like apple.com. If nothing loads, it’s your connection — toggle Wi-Fi off and on, or try a different network.
- If you use a VPN, make sure it’s actually connected and working; a half-connected VPN blocks everything. Turn it off to test.
- On a work or school network, a firewall may block the site — check with your network administrator.
Fix 4: Update Safari
Safari ships with macOS, so you update it by updating the system.
- Open the Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any available update, then restart and try the page again.
FAQ
Only one site fails but everything else works? That site is likely down or incompatible — wait and retry, or contact the site owner. Try adding /index.html to the end of the address.
Every site fails? It’s your network, not Safari — fix Wi-Fi/VPN first (Fix 3).
