Mac Screen Keeps Auto-Dimming or Brightness Won't Stay Put? Turn Off Auto-Brightness and True Tone

Your Mac’s screen dims or brightens on its own as the room light changes, or the colors look warmer than you expect — and you’d rather brightness just stay where you set it.

Why: If your Mac has an ambient light sensor, Automatically adjust brightness raises and lowers the screen to match the room. True Tone separately shifts the screen’s color to match the room light, which can read as a warm tint. Both are on by default. Turning them off makes brightness and color hold steady.

Fix 1: Turn off Automatically adjust brightness

1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Displays in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Turn off Automatically adjust brightness.
3. Set the Brightness slider where you want it — it will now stay there as room light changes.

This toggle only appears if your Mac has an ambient light sensor. On a MacBook, you can also set a fixed level: press the Brightness Up / Brightness Down keys after turning the toggle off.

A heads-up from Apple: turning off automatic brightness can affect battery life, energy use, and long-term display health, so leave it on if those matter more to you than a fixed level.

Fix 2: Turn off True Tone (the warm-tint cause)

If the screen looks fine on brightness but the color shifts warm or cool through the day, that’s True Tone, not brightness.

1. Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
2. Select your display at the top if more than one is listed.
3. Turn off True Tone.

True Tone only appears on Macs and Apple displays that support it (Retina displays and certain external Apple displays). With it off, the screen keeps one consistent color regardless of the room.

Fix 3: Stop the screen dimming on battery

A MacBook on battery dims the screen briefly to save power — separate from the ambient sensor.

1. System Settings > Battery (or Lock Screen on desktops).
2. Under battery options, turn off Slightly dim the display on battery.
3. While there, set Turn display off on battery when inactive to a longer time, or Never, if the screen is dimming because it’s idling.

FAQ

My brightness keeps changing even with the toggle off. Recheck Displays — make sure Automatically adjust brightness is actually off, and on a MacBook turn off Slightly dim the display on battery in Battery settings (Fix 3).

The screen looks yellow or warm, not dim. That’s True Tone (Fix 2) or Night Shift, not brightness. Turn off True Tone first.

There’s no “Automatically adjust brightness” option. Your Mac doesn’t have an ambient light sensor, so the screen isn’t auto-dimming from light — check Battery settings instead (Fix 3).
