How to Restore Files from a Time Machine Backup on Mac

You deleted a file by mistake, or you need an earlier version of a document, and you have a Time Machine backup.

Why: Time Machine keeps snapshots of your files over time. You can step back through those snapshots and restore exactly what you need — a single file, a folder, or an older version of a document — without touching anything else.

Fix 1: Enter Time Machine and restore a file

Open the folder where the file used to be (for example, your Documents folder).
Open Time Machine — use Spotlight (it’s in the Other folder) or the Time Machine menu in the menu bar if you’ve turned it on.
Use the arrows next to the Finder windows, or the timeline on the right, to move back to a date when the file was still there. The currently selected backup is highlighted in red in the timeline.
Select one or more items, then click Restore.

Restored items go back to their original location — a file from Documents returns to Documents.

A pulsing, light-to-dark gray tick mark in the timeline means that backup is still loading or validating on the disk; wait a moment for it to finish.

Fix 2: Restore an older version of a document

If the file still exists but you want a previous version, many apps support this directly:

Open the document.
Choose File > Revert To > Browse All Versions.
Step back through the versions stored in Time Machine, find the one you want, and restore it.

Fix 3: Restore everything (whole disk or new Mac)

If you’re recovering from a full backup — for example onto a replacement Mac or after erasing — use Migration Assistant to bring back all your personal files, apps and user account from the Time Machine backup. You can also select your entire disk inside Time Machine and click Restore.

If you turned on backup encryption during setup, you’ll need your backup password to restore.

FAQ

I don’t see the file in any backup. Step further back in time — it may predate the snapshots you’re looking at, or it was created and deleted between backups.

Will restoring overwrite my current files? Restoring returns items to their original location; if a file with the same name exists, macOS asks whether to Keep Both, Replace or Keep Original.

Can I restore to a different folder? Yes — drag the item out of the Time Machine window to the location you want instead of clicking Restore.
