You move your pointer toward the edge of the screen, but it won’t cross over to your iPad — or the iPad never shows up for Universal Control.

Why: Universal Control rides on top of Continuity, so it needs both devices on the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff on, the devices close together, and neither device sharing its connection. A VPN, firewall, or stale state can block it.

Fix 1: Check the requirements and enable it on both devices

Sign both devices in to the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication on.
Turn on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff on each.
Keep them within about 30 feet (10 meters) — closer is better for first connection.
Make sure the iPad isn’t sharing its cellular connection and the Mac isn’t sharing its internet.

Then enable the feature:

On the Mac (macOS Ventura 13 or later): System Settings → Displays → Advanced → turn on “Allow your pointer and keyboard to move between any nearby Mac or iPad.”
On the iPad: Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity → turn on Cursor and Keyboard.

Fix 2: Connect manually from Displays

If the iPad still doesn’t link automatically:

On the Mac, go to System Settings → Displays, click the Add Display (+) menu, and choose your iPad under Link Keyboard and Mouse.

Fix 3: Sleep/wake, then toggle and restart

Put both devices to sleep, then wake them and try again.
If it still fails, turn Universal Control off on each device, restart both, then turn it back on.

Fix 4: Clear VPN, security software, and firewall blocks

Disconnect any VPN or third-party security software on both devices, then retest.
On the Mac, open System Settings → Network → Firewall and make sure it is not set to block all incoming connections. That setting prevents the connection Universal Control needs.
