Why: Purgeable space is space macOS can free up on its own by removing files it can re-create or re-download — caches, snapshots, and iCloud-optimized files. You can’t delete purgeable files by hand, but macOS clears them automatically when you actually need the room.

Fix 1: Understand what “purgeable” means

In Disk Utility, available space is made up of free space plus purgeable space. Apple defines purgeable as “space that macOS can free up when needed by removing files from your computer” — you can’t manually remove the files designated purgeable, but macOS removes them as space is required. So if you have 20 GB free and 30 GB purgeable, your Mac can hand back close to 50 GB when an app or update needs it.

Fix 2: Let macOS reclaim it by adding pressure

The fastest way to convert purgeable space into usable space is to make the Mac need it.

Restart your Mac (Apple menu > Restart) — this clears many caches that show as purgeable.
Try the task that needs space (copying a large file, installing an update). macOS frees purgeable space on demand to make room.
Check the result in Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.

Fix 3: Manage Optimize Mac Storage and iCloud files

Much purgeable space comes from Optimize Mac Storage, which keeps full-resolution files in iCloud and a local placeholder that can be downloaded again.

Open System Settings > General > Storage.
Review the Recommendations there — turning Store in iCloud / Optimize Mac Storage on lets macOS offload files automatically; turning it off pulls originals back down (using more space, not less).
Empty the Trash, delete large downloads, and remove apps you don’t use to add genuine free space alongside the purgeable amount.
