Can't Empty the Trash on Mac? Fix Locked and In-Use Files

You try to empty the Trash and macOS says a file is in use, locked, or can’t be modified or deleted.

Why: macOS won’t delete a file while an app (or a background process) still has it open, and it won’t delete an item you’ve marked Locked without your say-so. Quitting the app, unlocking the item, or clearing the process that’s holding the file lets the Trash empty.

Fix 1: Quit the app, then unlock the item

1. If a file is in use, quit the app you opened it with (Command-Q), then Control-click the Trash in the Dock > Empty Trash.
2. If a file is locked, drag it out of the Trash, select it, choose File > Get Info (or press Command-I), and deselect the Locked checkbox. Then move it back to the Trash and empty.
3. To delete a single stubborn item without emptying everything, open the Trash, Control-click the item > Delete Immediately, then confirm.

Fix 2: Restart to release a background process

A file can stay “in use” because of an app’s background helper, not the app window you closed.

1. Choose Apple menu > Restart.
2. After your Mac restarts, Control-click the Trash > Empty Trash before reopening anything.

Fix 3: Start in safe mode

If a login item or startup helper grabs the file the moment you log in, boot into safe mode so those items don’t load.

• Apple silicon (M-series): Shut down, press and hold the power button until “Loading startup options” appears, select your disk, then hold Shift and click Continue in Safe Mode.
• Intel: Restart and immediately press and hold Shift until the login window appears.

Empty the Trash, then restart normally to leave safe mode.

Fix 4: Repair the disk with First Aid

If the file still won’t delete, the disk’s directory may be damaged.

1. Start up from macOS Recovery (Apple silicon: hold the power button and choose Options > Continue; Intel: restart and hold Command-R).
2. Select Disk Utility > Continue.
3. Select the disk that holds the file, click First Aid, then Run.
4. Quit Disk Utility, restart normally, and empty the Trash.

FAQ

Why does it say “the operation can’t be completed because the item is in use”? An app or background process still has the file open. Quit the app, or restart (Fix 2) to clear the process.

Is it safe to uncheck Locked? Yes — Locked is just a flag you (or an app) set to prevent accidental changes. Unlocking only affects that file.
