You copy text or an image on one Apple device and try to paste it on another, but nothing comes through, or the old clipboard contents paste instead.

Why: Universal Clipboard is part of Continuity, so it rides on the same plumbing as Handoff — same Apple Account, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and the devices close together. If Handoff is off or any of those pieces is missing, the clipboard never crosses over.

Fix 1: Check the four requirements

Universal Clipboard needs all of these at once:

Both devices signed in with the same Apple Account.
Both devices have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on.
Both devices have Handoff turned on (it’s on by default).
The devices are near each other, within about 30 feet (10 meters).

Fix 2: Turn on Handoff on both devices

Universal Clipboard rides on Handoff, so if Handoff is off, copy-and-paste won’t work.

On the Mac: Open System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff and turn on Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
On the iPhone or iPad: Open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity (or AirPlay & Handoff) and turn on Handoff.

Fix 3: Copy, then paste promptly

The shared clipboard is only held briefly, and is replaced the moment you copy something new on either device.

Copy on the first device (for example, select text and choose Copy).
Switch to the second device and paste right away (Edit > Paste, or Command-V / long-press > Paste).
If it doesn’t appear, copy again and paste without delay — copying something else in between wipes it.

Fix 4: Update and restart

Install the latest macOS and iOS/iPadOS updates on every device.
Restart the devices and try the copy-and-paste again.
If you use a VPN, make sure its configuration doesn’t block local networking, which can break Continuity features.

Do the devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network? They both need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on and be near each other, but they don’t have to be joined to the same network — Continuity sets up its own short-range link.
