Handoff Not Working Between iPhone and Mac? How to Fix It

Published ✓ Verified ⏱️ 2 min read October 9, 2025 · by Ryan Bennett

You start an email or a webpage on one device, but the Handoff icon never appears on your Mac’s Dock or your iPhone’s Lock Screen.

Why: Handoff is part of Continuity, which needs both devices signed in to the same Apple Account, with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on, close together, and the Handoff toggle enabled on each. A VPN or a mismatched account quietly breaks it.

Fix 1: Check the core requirements

  1. Confirm every device is signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on each device.
  3. Keep the devices within about 30 feet (10 meters) of each other.

If any of these is off, Handoff has nothing to advertise.

Fix 2: Make sure Handoff is turned on everywhere

Handoff is on by default, but check both ends:

  • On the Mac (macOS Ventura 13 or later): Apple menu → System Settings → General → AirDrop & Continuity (older labels: AirDrop & Handoff). Turn on “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.” On older macOS: Apple menu → System Preferences → General → tick the same option.
  • On the iPhone or iPad: Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity (older label: AirPlay & Handoff) → turn on Handoff.

Fix 3: Confirm the app supports Handoff, then check your VPN

  1. Handoff only works in apps that support it — Mail, Safari, Maps, Calendar, Notes, Reminders, and many third-party apps. Test with Safari: open a page on the iPhone and look for the Safari Handoff icon at the left of the Mac’s Dock.
  2. If you use a VPN, its configuration may block local networking and break Continuity. Disconnect it (or allow local networking) and try again.

Fix 4: Toggle Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, then restart

Turn Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off and back on on both devices. If the icon still doesn’t show, restart both devices — this re-establishes the Continuity link.

FAQ

Where does the Handoff icon appear? On the Mac, at the far left of the Dock. On iPhone/iPad, in the App Switcher (older iOS showed it on the Lock Screen).

It works one direction but not the other? Recheck the Handoff toggle on the device that isn’t advertising — it’s a per-device setting, so one side can be off.
