Your sound crackles, pops, or distorts during playback even though the device is selected and the volume is reasonable.

Why: The most common causes are audio “enhancements” that don’t agree with your hardware, or a default audio format your device can’t handle cleanly — not broken speakers.

Fix 1: Turn off audio enhancements

Open Start → Settings → System → Sound.
Under Output, click your audio device.
Select Audio enhancements and turn them Off.

On Windows 10: right-click the Volume icon → Sounds → Playback tab → device → Properties → Enhancements → Disable all enhancements.

Fix 2: Change the default audio format

A sample rate that’s too high (or just mismatched) often causes crackling. Step it down.

Settings → System → Sound → under Output, click your device.
Select Advanced, and under Default format, choose a different option — for example 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality) or 24 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality).
Play audio and test. Try another format if the first doesn’t help.

On Windows 10: Sounds → Playback tab → device → Properties → Advanced tab → pick a different Default format.

Fix 3: Update or reinstall the audio driver

Select Start, search Device Manager, open it.
Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
Right-click your audio device → Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
Restart your PC.

Fix 4: Restart the Windows Audio services

Win + R  →  services.msc  →  Enter

Right-click Windows Audio → Restart, then right-click Windows Audio Endpoint Builder → Restart. Test playback again.
