Second Monitor Not Detected in Windows 11? Work Through the Fixes in Order

You connected a second monitor, but Windows acts like it isn’t there — the screen stays black or “No signal.”

Why: A black external screen is almost always one of three things: Windows is set to show only one screen, a hardware/cable conflict, or a stuck graphics driver. Fixing those in order is faster than reinstalling drivers, which Microsoft lists last.

Fix 1: Set the projection mode to Extend

If Windows is set to “PC screen only,” the second monitor gets no image even though it’s connected.

Press Win + P to open the Project panel.
Choose Extend (or Duplicate to mirror).
If the panel doesn’t appear on the working screen, press Win + P, then press the Down arrow and Enter to cycle to Extend blind.

Fix 2: Click Detect

If the display still isn’t listed, ask Windows to look for it again.

Go to Settings > System > Display.
Scroll to Multiple displays and select Detect.

If it appears now, drag the display boxes to match your physical layout and set which one is the main display.

Fix 3: Reset the graphics driver and restart

A hung graphics driver can stop new displays from registering.

Press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B. The screen flickers and beeps — this restarts the graphics stack without losing your work.
Re-check Settings > System > Display.
If nothing changes, do a full Start > Power > Restart with the monitor plugged in and powered on.

Fix 4: Rule out the cable, port, and dock

Microsoft’s hardware checklist, in order:

Disconnect docks, dongles, and adapters. “Connected docks, dongles, adapters and other hardware can cause conflicts.” Plug the monitor straight into the PC to test.
Reseat the cable at both ends, then swap the cable — if a known-good cable works, the old one was faulty.
Try a different video port on the PC (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, DVI).
Test the monitor on another PC to confirm the monitor and its cable work at all.

If the monitor works elsewhere but not here, update or roll back the display driver: Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click your adapter > Update driver (or Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver if the problem started after an update).

My laptop only has one video port — can I run two external monitors? Not directly. A single video output usually drives one external screen. You’ll need a docking station or a USB display adapter to add more.
