Volume or Network Icon Missing from the Windows 11 Taskbar?

Windows 11 groups the network and volume indicators in its Quick Settings area. They are separate from background app icons under Other system tray icons. A Windows 10 system-icon visibility toggle or the hidden-icons arrow cannot restore this Windows 11 area.

Fix 1: Check Quick Settings and the underlying device

Press Win + A. If Quick Settings opens, check its network and volume controls. Also check Settings → Network & internet and Settings → System → Sound. A missing Wi-Fi or audio device is a driver/device problem; a working device with an absent or unresponsive taskbar area suggests a shell problem.

Fix 2: Restart Windows Explorer

Save work, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, locate Windows Explorer, right-click and choose Restart. The taskbar will disappear briefly. If it does not return, use Run new task → explorer.exe in Task Manager. Save work and restart Windows if the problem persists.

Fix 3: Update and troubleshoot the affected device

Install applicable Windows updates. If sound or networking also fails in Settings, use the corresponding Get Help troubleshooter and the device manufacturer’s current driver for your exact model. Obtain an offline replacement driver before uninstalling your only network adapter.

If the whole taskbar freezes, use taskbar not responding. If only a third-party app’s tray icon is missing, its visibility can be changed under Other system tray icons; that is a different control from network and volume.

Should I delete IconStreams or PastIconsStream? Those registry instructions are not a general repair for Windows 11’s Quick Settings indicators. Diagnose the shell and devices first.

Does a network icon prove internet access? No. Check an actual connection and the adapter status; an icon can be present while the network has a separate problem.
