Search in File Explorer Not Working in Windows 11? Rebuild the Index and Fix It

You type in the File Explorer search box and get no results, or it misses files you can plainly see in the folder.

Why: File Explorer search leans on the Windows Search index. If a folder isn’t in the indexed locations, or the index database is corrupt or out of date, search comes back empty even though the files are right there. The fixes below run Microsoft’s troubleshooter, restart the search process, and rebuild the index from scratch.

Fix 1: Run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter

This resets search to its default behavior and catches the common problems automatically:

1. Right-click Start → Terminal (or open Command Prompt).

2. Run:

   msdt.exe -ep WindowsHelp id SearchDiagnostic

3. In the troubleshooter, tick the problems that match (for example, Files don’t appear in search results) and let Windows detect and fix them.

Fix 2: Restart Windows Search

The background search process can get stuck. Ending it makes Windows restart it cleanly:

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc for Task Manager, then open the Details tab.
2. In the Name column, right-click SearchHost.exe (Windows 11) → End task → End process.
3. Search again — Windows Search relaunches automatically the next time you type.

Fix 3: Make sure the folder is being indexed, then rebuild the index

If a specific folder never returns results, add it to the index — then rebuild so the database is rewritten:

1. Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows.
2. Under Find my files, pick Enhanced to index the whole PC, or click Customize search locations here to add the missing folder under Classic.
3. On the same page, open Advanced indexing options.
4. Click Advanced → Rebuild, confirm, and leave the PC on. A full rebuild can take a few hours (Microsoft says up to 24 hours on large drives), and search may be incomplete until it finishes.

Fix 4: Restart the Windows Font Cache Service

Microsoft notes that a stuck Windows Font Cache Service can break search results. Restart it:

1. In the taskbar search, type services.msc and open the Services console.
2. Right-click Windows Font Cache Service → Stop, wait a moment, then right-click it again → Start.
3. Try your search again.

FAQ

Do I have to wait for the whole rebuild before searching? You can search right away, but results will be incomplete until indexing catches up. Leave the PC plugged in and idle to let it finish faster.

Search works in some folders but not others. Those folders aren’t in the index. Add them under Searching Windows → Customize search locations here, or switch Find my files to Enhanced to index everything.
